: Seriously, Anyone Hunt With The Pumpers On Here?
: October 09, 2007, 01:59:28 AM
I have six springer rifles that range  in quality from the R- series guns down to the Cummins B-3, but my go to and get it done hunting rifles are pumpers. In fact, because they were my first serious air rifles(for about twenty years my ONLY airgun was an iron sighted CB) ,I don't pay as much attention to the velocity claims made by spring gun manufacturers. I know I can get it done with less velocity, as long as the range is reasonable, and handling and features such as ease of loading and sighting options are more important to me. My walmart Remington Airmaster is  my main starling wacker, and the rocker dan which now has a reciever sight, as well as my new LE, are my squirrel and rabbit guns guns. The LE is tough to pump  with the supplied scope, but is a tack driver with Superdomes and CP 14.3's. I also have a Daisy SG in .22 that is very easy pumping ( my six year old can  pump it up) . It does 525fps with CP's and about 600fps with RWS hobbies, and will dispatch rabbits fine at twenty-five yards, and is very quiet.  The accuracy of these guns leaves nothing to be desired either. Although the scope on the Airmaster is an old b-6 Weaver with the small 3/4"  tube  salvaged off a powder burner that got an up-grade, and not in the same class as the centerpoint 3x9x32 on my R-10 , both are capable of the same practical accuracy at 25 yards. It's also nice to be able to pump the gun up and not worry about the temperature or whether your spring will take a set. Temperature is a big deal where I live (Western N.Y.) during the hunting season, and CO2 guns fall short in that department.

I've got a Cros1400 that has taken many rabbits and nutters. It was my most accurate rifle, gotta get it resealed. When I was a kid I would shoot pecans out of the top of the trees, useing irons freehand. The pumpers are nice to hunt with and I only punched enough paper to make sure sights are on before heading to the woods. Anyone know where to get a reseal kit for the 1400?

I have a Sheridan Blue Streak .20 pumper that I bought new when I was 12 yrs old, which unfortunately was a long time ago :(   but that gun still shoots like it was new and I've used it to hunt with.  I would hunt with it a lot more but I have a shoulder condition that just makes repeatedly pumping it up uncomfortable.

anyof the crosman tuners should be able to give you a hand with parts. Try Mountian Air and Crooked Barn

I have picked up a pumper in 25 years. Don't feel that anything is wrong with them I just don't own one. Temp is  minor factor for me and my goto springer has been converted to gas ram. I would like to pick up an older tuned real Benji but it's not on the short list.

Hey Bullseye, try Rick at Precision Pellet or BryanandAc@aol.com for a re-seal kit. Bryan and associates also have used 140's and 1400's for sale at times. Those were nice guns. Glad to see  there are other's that enjoy them. Longisland Hunter, I also have a bad shoulder and can relate. Overhead work, and repetive motion can leave me aching for days.  I fell from some scaffolding about fifteen years ago.  Spent a fun filled year and a half in PT and lost four months off work. There was nerve damage and  I screwed up my rotator cuff pretty good. I was thinking about getting one of the fully tuned 392's or Dan's from Mac and have heard they are way easier to pump, as well as more powerful  than stock guns. Anyone out there got one that they hunt with?  Are they really worth it?

I wish I had the sense to grab a 1400 when I was a kid or a Benjamin 342.
I just read some posts about guys who refurbish, I think it was on the Yellow Forum.
Also check the Crosman Forum, several referals for your info.

I still have my Sheridan from 1984 and shoots like new.  It still gets the job done, just less often.

I also love my Remmy 77, accurate and light, almost silent. Wish I could hunt with it, but no place to do it.

The only Pumper I have left is my Crosman 1377 but I do not hunt with it. Not as good with it as say! Ed... aka Shadow.  I think Ed can just use his finger and point at wild game and shoot to kill.. lol

Bobber , I find myself in the same boat as you almost.  My only springer is a CDT tuned S1k, this gun shoots great. The shadow is accurate and has enough velocity for my needs. I don’t know why but, it seems that when I need pest control I go to my pumpers. My 1377s can be  most  effective “starling wackers” and a 2289 can make short work of tree rats. I guess I just feel more comfortable with the pumpers, because the S1k can do it all. Go figure.

Skip, I agree with the comfort factor you mention. A little while ago I had bought a new G-1 Extreme and put gold trigger in it and it was just punching out quarter sized  five and ten shot groups at twenty -five yards. I was thinking man this is friggin great , I just couldn't miss with the thing. Couldn't believe I had a gun that for about $150.00  could compete on a even keel with my R-10. So, I went for a quick squirrel hunt out back and didn't get a shot at anything.  On the way back I took a shot at the target I still had up, and the shot landed about four inches to the right, away from the group I had shot an hour before! A sguirrel would have been shot in the guts if I had aimed at the head and it was on a limb and  facing left and horizontal. I was like what the hell, and I shot a few groups and found out the zero wandered. I went through the process of elimination and it turned out that the scope was defective, and I took care of it and now all is good. But man was I getting frustrated for awhile there! So, I took out my plastic stocked, scoped,1377 and fired a few groups with the same Gamo Hunters I'd been using in the G-1, and just smiled at the dime sized five shot groups at 10 meters. Got my confidence back , and realized I wasn't too screwed up and the "me" factor wasn't the problem with my G-1 this time.
