I just returned from the NMCA Hot Rod and Muscle Car nationals in Memphis, Tennessee. Wow! What a show! We had about 450 cars in attendance racing and probably 200 show cars as well. The weather was perfect and we had a HUGE party Friday night with about 400 people in attendance, BBQ, beer, live music and a raffle in which we gave away several hundred dollars worth of prizes including a $700 cash prize to our 50/50 drawing winner. It was an abslolute blast!
While in Tennessee, (I have been to this race 6 years in a row!) I encountered incredible hospitality. In fact, the rudest people I've met there were tourists! The locals are awesome and I wanted to let you all know how much fun I had with them. These folks would give you the shirt of their back to help you out. I wish I could say the same for the folks closer to my home. My car broke down 160 miles east of my home in Topeka along I-70 at about 6:30 in the evening. I stood along side the road until 11:30 PM as literally THOUSANDS of cars passed by and not one person stopped to offer assistance. When the tow truck finally showed up (man, that was not a fun bill to pay) the passing motorists wouldn't even move over to allow us room to hook up the truck. What a dissapointing feeling.
I wish more people were like those from Tennessee. They have been raised right and I think much the same can be said about other southern states. We can all learn from them.

I know what your saying, the Southerners are a fine bunch of fokes, while us northerners are a cold bunch if scares rabbits.
I have hunted down south, and spent vacation time there, and they are super people.
Buy they tell me that a YANKEE, is a northerner that's visiting, and a DARN YANKEE is a northerner that fixin to put down roots there ! hehehe...he
My in-laws were the worst people I ran into down south, they moved there 12 years ago, but haven't changed a bit !
I think if we could get rid of the LIBERALS and there POLITICIANS up here, we might start being a little bit more friendly to one another !
Just my observations on this matter ;-)

Did someone say Libers.. hehe Bill... Ya I came to South Carolina from California and let me tell you the folks here are like you said Ron. People you do not even know will wave or say hello to you. That is one thing you never see in California, or at least the places I lived. One reason is most do not know how to say anything in english..:) Yes Southern Hospitality is wonderful and these folks know how to live right...

Wow Ron you are lucking. I was stationed there not far from the drag strip and live there after I got out. I couldn't wait to get out of there. Racism was bad no one would do squat for you. I only met a couple of people there that were good people. Now I have been other places in the south with the same results as you just never Memphis. Maybe it's changing?????

Of the seven events on the NMCA tour, four of them are south of the Mason Dixon line. We have events in Florida, Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee. At all of these races, the locals have been nothing but hospitible. When we travel north (and especially northeast), the level of rudeness increases exponentially.
As for the issues with racism, I have not experienced it in Memphis. I am not saying it is non-existent, but I have not seen it. I guess drag racing brings out the best in everybody.
