: Took a break yesterday
: kirby999 October 19, 2007, 10:32:14 AM
and went fishing with my brother . We spent the day mostly dragging 2" curly tail plastic jigs behind the boat on Ultralight tackle . We wound up catching about 20-25 fish mostly crappies, with about 10 of them keepers that my brother took home to a co-worker .  Here's a picture my brother took with his camera phone of the big fish of the day that I got in. It's a spotted bass that hit the smallest outfit I had spooled with Ande Tournament green 4 lb. test . It took a real 10 minutes to wear this one out . I'd already lost a nice hybrid that I got up to the boat and he took a last run that caught me off guard with my drag too tight . It doesn't take much to snap the Ande Green. kirby

Hey David,

Looks like you know how to relax buddy !

It takes a lot of skill to land the bid ones with an ultra-lite rig, but that's where the skill come in ! It can sure make a calm day exciting when you fish that way though...

My brother and I went to the lake yesterday and the weather couldn't have been better . I think it got up to the high 60's . IMO the fall is "the" best time to be on the water . The weather usually nice , there's very few folks out there ; fishing or boating. We  didn't see a jet-ski either time we went . And best of all the fish like the cooler water temps too and usually cooperate . We saw deer feeding on the new grass that has grown on the shoreline where the drought has lowered the lake levels around here.Saw lots of different birds including blue herons, kingfishers , and too many crows . By our next trip crow season should be open and I may pack my Crosman 13XX pistol along for a little target practice.   We caught over fifty crappie , spotted and largemouth bass , and this week; hybrids (some places call them wipers , a cross between a striper and a white bass) My brother kept about 15-20 of the larger crappies for his  co-worker who asked for some, and the big fish landed with our ultra-light rigs this week a nice hybrid . This is the best time of the year ! kirby

MMMMMMMMM good David. Love fried fish on a cast iron skillet..:) When I lived in California you hardly ever could get on a lake without knowing 6 months in advance you were going.. lol. Not to sure I would of wanted to eat any of those liberal planted fish their anyway. hehe.. But here in S.C. every where you go there is a fish fry goin on some where..:) Love them fried cat fish as well..

Man, that looks like some fun! I also like fishing and have caught several wipers. Boy, to they try out the tackle! The biggest so far is only 6 lbs but I hope to catch one of the big ones next spring. Heck, the state record is over 22 lbs! It seems I always catch one when I am not prepared for it and they take me for a ride. They are really a tremendous fighting fish.

Gene, we need a spot to share recipies on this forum. You know, for squirrel, rabbit, fish etc. I bet there are plenty of tasty combinations people have come up with.

I know was a lot bigger , it hit and I could never turn it with the ultra-light tackle and 4# line . It got down into some underwater timber and broke off. The trick to landing the bigger ones, is catching them in open water and chasing them down with the trolling motor if need be. Unfortunately , they like to hang out near the structure . I love the challenge of the ultralight tackle , If they get away , Oh well, I enjoy the fight while they're on ; most of the time I would release them anyway. kirby

I recently purchased a new St. Croix ultralight rod and coupled it with a Shimano Sahara 750 reel. I have yet to land anything of any size with it, but the thought of catching a 5# wiper with this combo conjures images of screaming drag and a big smile plastered on my face!

Thanks for the great pics and sharing the good times.
