Hi,

anyone here built a case for their pride and joy yet? Searched but could not find anything.

JT, I built one several years ago for a .22LR. I made it out of 1x2 and 1/4"ply. I used some eggcrate foam for the inside. I will look to see if I still have it, if so I'll post a pic. It looks like any other case, just wood instead of plastic or aluminum.

Mike,

Sounds like a good idea. Where did you find the eggcrate foam?

I got some wood and hardware for one about 5 weeks ago but never got in the mood to start it.

I am going to use stained wood for the outside and padded wood supports to pinch all the stuff in when the lid closes and line the inside with green pool-table top type material.

I'd like to see pictures of it when it is finished. Sounds like a good idea.

yeah.. started with the lid. Making it out of meranti (think it may be called luan elsewhere in the world) I used 42x7mm strips and laminated a 1.2m piece from 6 strips. Will keep you guys up to date. May use mdf for bottom as it would need to take the abuse ofputting down all over the place.

Ron, I cut up a cheap matress pad.

: some more laminating
: JTK November 15, 2007, 08:17:12 AM
decided to make the bottom from meranti as well as the mdf could have made it too heavy. It also mak have made the case imbalanced to carry..  Anyways. A pic of th laminating. Wife not to impressed about the stack in the lounge.

THought I would keepp the post up to date. Glueing the lid and bottom pieces together atm. Tomorrow it will be some planing and then some samding.. Not sure how I want to finish it yet though. Al made out of 48x8mm meranti(luan) laminated etc..  will keep the costs as well.. have used 8x 2.4m pieces so long. R26 (~$3.50) a piece and a bit of cold glue..  Worried about the strenght though and am thinking about laying a single layer of glass fibre on the inside to give it the strenght needed. Bought someoff cuts of foam for the inside. 4 strips of 1.8m x 18cm for R25 (~$3.5). So my case is $7 atm and need some hinges and a latch. Then of course the finishing...

: Hey I have the same floor tile.....
: DanoInTx November 17, 2007, 06:21:28 AM
.....but I didn't trip over any bricks on my way out to the refridgerator, so I guess that is your house:)

Looks good, can't wait to see it finished.  Might try Minwax Ebony stain and Minwax spray on poly for a top coat.  Haven't worked much with Luan, but I am familiar with it.  The open grain shrould soak up alot of stain giving you a real dark color.  The spray on poly might take a few good coats on that stuff though, will need to let it fully dry between coats and give it a good sanding from 220--320 grit or so between coats to knock down the raised grain.

Keep it up!
: some oil..
: JTK November 18, 2007, 04:56:46 AM
Finished the lid and bottom half today. a bit of plaining, some beltsanding and loads of orbital sanding :)

Decided to finish it with polywax to give a finish that I can continue to "oil".

Hi I am a cabinate maker and master carpenter thats my trade the easyest way to make any case  is to build a cube what ever the size is it dosn't matter as long as it is what you want the finish size to be.you put both the top and bottom on it just as ifyou were making a cube then set your fence on the table saw to cut off the top by running the box through turning it around on all sides this lets you make a top that not only the grain matches but it is the same size size top and bottom when you build the top and bottom seperate it's very hard to get them to match perfactly. I hope this is not confuseing

Hi Howie,

yes it makes sense.. thanks! will certainly keeep it in mind on next attempt. grains ligning up is not a problem as I used strips anyways..  But yes, it would heva made it easier. Dont have table saw yet though. Will be next purchase.  :)

I used to work on boats new and used build whatever the customer wanted everthing from beeing 7 to 8 stories up a mast to beeing under the boat in scuba gear as well as changing diesel engines but i'm a master carpenter and cabinet maker 3 generation custom woodworking is my bag they don't len just anyone rework woodworking in million dollar boats. A table saw is one of the best and most usefull tool you can have
: RE: rifle case wood
: JTK November 18, 2007, 07:44:51 AM
yeah..  I have a make shift home made one..  clamping my circular saw upside down on a home made table..this was when I made my pool table..  but that is another story.  worked for what I needed it for but a pain to set up. I am in IT so woodworking is just a hobby. But I would call myself a wood hore. I just love wood. Cant throw away offcuts worrying that I may need it.anyways..  have a few tools. need table and band saw next. then I am pretty much sorted I recon. I would love to woodwork for a living but there is just no real money in that here.. can make a living from fitting kitchen cuboards but proper carpentry not. Else I recon I would have done it.

I bought a nice plastic case in k mart for only 15.00 it will hold a scope mounted rifle and I have one I bought from a gun shop almost the same for $25.00 didn't know about the $15.00 one when I bought it.

nice..  I am unfortunately one of those sods with a brain for useless information..  Have to make stuff for myself. Hence the case..  but it ended up being very rewarding and I willdefinately do it again. 1st time I worked with polywax and the finish is spectacular to say the least. Last time I touch varnish!

looks real nice, for the foam you may want to try a camera store they often have foam for camera cases that works very well

Excellent job, JT! Very impressive.

You didn't say where you had found your foam, but around here, there are what are generically called "foam and fabric outlets", which my Mom haunts frequently for her sewing addiction. They typically stock all kinds of fabrics and materials for sewing, in addition to lots of different types of foam. Usually they'll have a cut-off bin where you can find scraps really cheaply. If you have any places like that around where you live, I'm sure they'd have some kind of useable foam for this and future boxes (after seeing this project, surely you'll be making more ;~).

The other source that you might check, if you haven't already, is camping and outdoor stores in the sleeping bag area.

Good luck in your quest for foam.

Great Job JT,

Looks like a million !!!

Another place to try is an upholstery shop, auto and furniture reupholstery shops use tons of this stuff to re-do auto seats and sofas and chairs.

Good job JT, loos super !

JT, when I made mine years ago I used an eggcrate foam matress pad. The cheap ones are less than $10 and you can get a few cases out of it. Yours looks alot better than mine did, I might have to make a few more.

Just out of curiousity, where are you located geographically?  I get TONS, and I mean TONS of high quality foam at work.  We get so much that we have begun just throwing it away.  This comes in sheets, maybe an inch thick, 2 feet wide, by maybe 5 feet long....if you are somewhat local I could just give you some?  Let me know.  danieljnelson (at) sbcglobal.net

Anyone that has ever gotten anything shipped from me on the forums in the last year or so knows the foam I am talking about, I use it for everything:)
