I can think of 2, you did and I would if I had one. Turned out nice J. It may not be a problem, but if you find that it slips on your shoulder, you can mask off the butt and put a few coats of bedliner on it. That will give it the appearance of a pad and no slipping.

Got 5 exhibition grade stocks with a smooth finish. Need to practice {alot}to steady my hand before making cuts on those.

Have6 more smooth beech stocks and a straight grainwalnut to do before I'll touch that exhibition grade wood. Even then, might pass it on to someone with more experiance as I see the results I can yield.

I haven't tried any checkering yet, But as you say even with alot of practice, I would probably send the exhibition grade off to someone else. Wouldn't want to mess up. Good luck.

Anytime I have seen checkering that is not of the type done with a lazer I am truly impressed. The people that have that kind of skill, focus, patience and let's not forget talent make me real envious at times. I'm still trying to stay inside the lines when I have tried stippling something, God forbid I get my hands ahold of something sharp:)

I can understand how 'smiths charge $100+ for each panel. Slow process, that doesn't do well to rush . . .

It is kind of relaxing to cut a half dozen lines, then crosscut them, though.

The well formed sharp points have a very nice feel too . . .

The same kind of person who would strip down the stock of a $78.00 SKS, steam out the dents, raise the grain, sand and steel wool it and then tung oil it without stain because the honey color of the factory stock is actually so beautiful that it is a shame to cover it with stain. It took me over a month JUST to apply the 10 coats of tung oil, steel wool it with 4 ought and buff it with a woolen rag. But it looks better than I would have imagined.

A labor of love hehehe and I would be guilty of taking a real cheap B3 stock and putting week's into a custom camo job on it. Result's, priceless hehehe. Ed

Yeah, it is nice when you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I've found that scratch remover, paint/plastic polish from Autozone does a great job of polishing the stocks.
My little QB78D now has a stock that looks nicer than the one on my HW80.
