Has anyone had any experience shooting squirrels with an airsoft rifle? A friend has one that shoots 460 fps and claims that he has killed squirrels out to 30 yards with it.

I doubt it. Unless he hit it in the eye, then maybe. I've  never seen one that accurate though. Airsoft guns are meant to be safely shot at people, I cant see them being effective at killing a squirrel, but I could be wrong.

I've never even held an airsoft gun much less shot one,,,, but somehow I seriously doubt if they would be an effective hunting weapon.......
it's simply not what they were designed for.

I would really like to see proof of that.  It is possible he may have gotten one at 10yds but typically airsoft guns are not as accurate as a regular pellet gun and 460fps is a LOT for a airsoft gun (did he chrony the gun?) but still not enough to kill a squirrel at 30yds.  Maybe he meant 30ft?  Was he using regular paint balls?  I don't think I have seen airsoft guns advertised more with than ~360fps velocity.

Well, maybe if you were to take a swing at a squirrel with one, you MIGHT knock him down! LOL

Well, I guess an airsoft gun probably would make an effective club   :)

I too thought of them as toys, as well as my friend. He got it from a guy that was needing some money, he claimed he had several hundred dollars in it. Has a nice Redfield 3X9 on it. It is a copy of an Accuracy International arctic warfare sniper rifle. This thing is all steel and looks like the real thing, weighs around 8-9 lbs. It shoots 6mm plastic BB's that come in weights around .20, .25, & .30 grams. He shoots the .25's. My calculations say that is 3.8581 grains. Not very heavy. But he swears it shoots 1 inch groups at 30 yards. I shot it at night out the back door of his house just to see what it was like. It has no recoil, is very quiet, but sounds like the little plastic BB was wacking the tree pretty hard! It is a bolt action, takes about 25 lbs to pull the bolt back, cocking a spring and piston inside of the bolt housing, much like an air rifle, just not as strong or as long of a spring. 30 round magazine. Really neat gun, and very well made. They sell for only a little over a $100 now. Would be nice if it was powerful enough to hunt with. They even make a copy of a Remington 700 with the same air cylinder.

All that money spent on a Airsoft when he could get a AIRGUN!.:) Sound's like the Gamo vid were the guy is dropping a wild pig with a Rapter pellet. :( I'm not seeing any sort of penatration with a airsoft pellet heck those nutter's are super tough even for a lead one. Ed

No they are not toys and they keep making them better and better. But to shoot game with plastic makes no sense to me. Yes, at a very close distance you may be able to take a squirrrel with the right shot. If you want to take game, choose the gun for the task. Air soft guns are not the answer. But they are alot of fun otherwise.

Hey Guys,

I thought the same thing about paint ball guns until I got hit by one !!!!!

A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to play "war games" with them, using tree marking pistols. All was fun, until I stopped one of them toys. My doctor thought that I had been hit with a baseball bat. Never more !

I have seen 6mm aluminum balls being sold on eBay, they may be what he used to kill a tree rat.? They also sell them for paint ball guns ??

I would say paintball hurts way more than airsoft.  Paintball is a .60cal ball coming at you at 300fps, and airsoft is a light 6mm plastic bb.  I seriously doubt you could kill something with a bb gun.  Even a geared up one.  460fps is a little low to hunt with pellets, but airsoft?  Thats just dumb.  Allt his imho.  But they sure as heck are fun to shoot at each other! (dont shoot your eyes out)

Yeah but his friend claims he 's killed squirrels up to 30yds!  The more I think about it the more I laugh.  Sorry I can't help it..

Maybe if he hammered the squirrel at 5-10yds on full auto in the head or poked his eye out and incapacitated him or stunned him briefly, he could walk up and finish the job with a baseball bat?  :) but we all know how tough a tree rat is..  At 30yds or even 20, that light plastic ball would have easily lost more than 50% of its energy.  I doubt it would even penetrate an aluminum soda can at 30yds, probably just knock it over.

aw well i think the 30 yrd bit can just be accepted as rubbish, have heard enough of the took out a tiger tank with a pea shooter at 10 miles, the story usually started as a near miss on a barn door at 10 feet.   i wonder if rifles should be supplied with a measuring tapes and gun cameras

Yeah, except the guy said it was a bolt action springer.  So much for full auto!  But I suppose you could kill something if you did had a full auto airsoft gun, if you were like right next to it.

Oh sorry, I thought we were playig the "telephone" game  :-)   (anyone old enough to remember that?)

Didn't he originally say his friend got a racoon at 50yds with an airsoft rifle shooting lead-filled plastic BB's?

There is no way on God's green earth!!!!!!!!!!  The plastic pellets loose so much energy in 30 yards that it just isn't possible.  Besides the fact that they are 6mm and only .25 gr at the most and usually .20 gr.  I shoot airsoft all the time for training in Army.  We do room clearings and forced entries.  Man you don't want a shot from point blank range without a safety mask.  And you sure know you've been hit.  But at 30 yards if you get hit it's like a hard rain drop hitting you.  We have M9 pistols, M-4 rifles, shotguns, AK-47's and even M-249 SAW machinegun airsoft weapons.  They are all shooting between 350 for the pistols and 450 for the rifles, shotguns and machine guns.  Man you DO NOT want to get caught out in the open when your on the wrong side of a M249 gunner, 800 rounds per minute.  You CAN NOT out run that.
