: My First CFX Hunt
: longislandhunter August 11, 2006, 12:46:12 PM
Yesterday I sighted in my new .177 CFX / Leapers 3x9x50 mildot combo using RWS Superdomes and this afternoon I got a chance to take it out for a quick hunt and give it a try on starlings. I  Headed out to the duck farm I shoot at and, not having much shooting light left,  used some hay bales to make a blind just inside one of the barn doors.  Right outside the barn, 25 yards away, is a huge dead pine tree that the starlings use as a roost and an lookout  post.  Right after I set up I had the first group of starlings land.  Picked out one on the very top, squeezed, and heard that beautiful sound of the superdome striking home.  Bird fell like a stone with a nice soft thud upon impact.  A kill with the first shot of the first hunt for a new rifle,,,,, better karma one cannot get !!  Proceeded to pick off 4 more starlings with 4 more shots, same nice "thud" for each one when they hit the ground :)  After that the birds just disappeared.  Peeked outside the barn and saw why, there was a huge hawk perched in the tree right next to my pine tree.  Saw some pidgeons in one of the pens and decided to make a stalk.  Got within 40 yards of a really nice light colored pidgeon, sat down, took aim, pulled the trigger and bam,,,had a dead pidgeon.  Hit him dead center, right where I aimed.  God I love this gun !!   As I was walking back to my truck through the farm I walked right up on a small woodchuck.  We surprised each other when we were 10 yards apart.  He made the mistake of standing still to long, put the crosshairs between his eye and ear and a second later had a dead woodchuck.  Got rid of him and continued on to the truck, turned the corner of one of the barns and believe it or not there was another woodchuck standing there again 10 yards from me.  Aimed, fired, same result as the first chuck.  A great first hunt for me and my new CFX.

Fantastic............... The CFX really is a nice shooter. Always keeps great goups for me. Very consistant. Looks like we have another CFX lover.... he he he. BTW, my CFX Synthetic has the same scope you have.... :) It is a very nice scope but I now think it is to much glass. I also have a BSA 50 mil and now that I have been buying different scopes, I am learning that the size is not what counts for me. I am going to do some thinning of my big glass soon though. Will be sticking with the 32 and 40 mil scopes.

Back to your CFX, Longislandhunter...  Your wife is gonna shoot you with your own CFX if she see's any blood or feathers around dat table.. he he he

Sure glad you had a fantastic experience with your CFX..  It is a great all around airgun. :)

Yote, next time I nail a woodchuck I promise I'll post some pics of it :)  The two I shot yesterday I just threw back down the hole, but next one I get will get posted here.  I went shootin this afternoon again, and was within range of two more hogs but decided not to shoot.  Figured I'd let them live, and breed, to make more ground hog targets for the future.
