Mike.... The discussion of muzzle brakes is fine but to discuss converting a muzzle brake into a device that will reduce the sound (report) at the muzzle, which would be illegal, is not permitted on this forum. Helps to keep us out of trouble 8) 8)

Hello Mike, Welcome to the GTA Forums !

A muzzle break will not do much to quiet your springer, but a good tune from an AirSmith can do wonders to quiet down and smooth out your Gamo Big Cat.

Most of the sound that you hear is from your action, right next to your ear, when you fire your rifle.

If you are interested in Custom MuzzleBreaks, Gene at AirGunToys, makes excellent custom muzzle breaks, and can be found here: http://www.airguntoys.com/store/shop/index2.htm (http://www.airguntoys.com/store/shop/index2.htm)

For a Great Tune on your Big Cat, CDT does a Great work on springers, and can be found here: http://charliedatuna.com/index.html (http://"http://charliedatuna.com/index.html)

I hope this helps you !

Bill

OK, schooling needed on this illegal activity of reducing the noise.  If it's illegal to reduce the noise of an air rifle, how is it that Gamo can do so on the Whisper and even claim that it reduces the noise by as much as 52%?  This is the second post of this type I've read today.  I can see where it would be illegal on a gun that must be registered with the local authorities.  But an air rifle?

Hello Robbie,

I can not answer your question as to why Gamo and others can do this.

Bill, thanks for the link, even if it was defunct.  I did a search of the blog to find some info, whether it be the exact info intended or not I'll never know.  In my opinion one of the key words overlooked was "fire"arm.  I would assume years ago when powder burning guns took on the name of "fire"arms it was due to the flash of fire that could be observed.  Since when did an air rifle produce "fire".  So if the design is an integral part of the barrel and cannot be used on anything but the gun intended I assume it could be considered legal.  That's the way I understood what I read.  Thanks again.

Welcome, Mike! For better or worse, the subject happens to be very sensitive with respect to airguns. It's the policy of this and a few other forums to fly as far under the radar as possible in matters related to issues that could bring legal liability to the GTA or any of its members. As Bob (CDT) says, "Helps to keep us out of trouble".

The question of the legality of the unit that is built onto the Gamo Whisper, as well as other airguns, for the purpose of lowering decibels (even as little as 1 decibel) has to do with whether the unit can potentially be removed from the airgun, and mounted onto any firearm (and the law considers the potential in the broadest of interpretations). If the answer is yes, then it isn't legal to have in your possession without paying the necessary federal firearms fees, and you won't find it on a commercially available airgun in the US. Therefore, if a unit could be fitted to your Big Cat, it could probably be removed just as easily.

What you will find on those units that ARE available in the US, such as on the Whisper and others, is that they are integral to the gun, and cannot be removed with any reasonable expectation that they could be mounted onto a firearm. Here's some suggested reading:

This link will take you to Dr. Robert Beeman's website for a comprehensive treatise on the subject. It's a long read, but very informative.

Hopefully, that clears it up a little.
