: I got a Gamo Big Cat...so what should I do to it?
: February 15, 2008, 07:48:53 AM
Hey guys, I'm new to all this so hopefully I don't step on any toes or cross some line, so please be patient with me.  I recently purchased the big cat just to do some plinking.  I'm not a big fan of hunting (I have nothing against it, would love to do it, just as long as I don't have to see the animal dying...) but I'd like to be able to shoot with some kind of accuracy...for myself and just for *_*_*_*_*_*s and giggles.  I got the big cat because of the fps and because it seemed like a good entry level rifle (especially since it was on sale at Big 5).  I've shot it a few times and have had good results... as far as I know.  My shots were grouped very close together, but they were off target down and to the left about 2-3 inches.  I was shooting at about 10 meters.  I was just testing the rifle and I was going to zero in the scope, but I read that I should replace the stock scope for something that isn't so cheap, so I'm going to do that instead of bothering with it and zero in the quality scope.  I decided on a 3-9x50 leapers scope (which will get to me next week).  So, my noobie questions are this:

1) I read about filling in the hollow stock.  How do I go about this?  Do I just take off the torx screws and then put whatever weight into the stock under the barrel and then put the stock back on, or is it more involved than that?

2) What is the barrel made out of?  Is it a metal barrel surrounded by plastic, or is it all plastic?

3) I wasn't considering replacing the trigger...I know I know, it's just 32 bucks and it'll help the rifle out, but I'm kinda cheap and I read somewhere that if you just stick with it, it'll break in and sweeten up.  I'll eventually give in and buy it...but I want to know, what other adjustments should be made to the rifle?

4) And finally, what kind of maintenance do I have to do?  What do I have to lube, and what do I have to clean, and what should I use to do it?

I guess that's it for now...I can't remember the other questions I had in mind, but if you guys can help me out with this, I would really appreciate it.

First welcome to GTA Jerry :) and second CONGRAT'S ON YOUR NEW SHOOTER!. When some of us fill the stock's, it's mainly the stock butt area. The inside of the stock is hollow in this area and by removing the two screw's which hold the buttpad on you can see a hollow chamber in there. Our member's have filled this area with several differnt materials to add weight, dampen the hollow sound when the airgun is fired. Among materials used are expanding spray foam, ductseal and memory foam which I and a few other's use. You can add or subtract memory foam without having to dig it out since it doesn't set hard. The Bull barrel is plastic which surround's a metal barrel. The stock trigger will smooth some with time but believe me if you were to replace it with a CDT trigger you will understand and feel the difference that a high quality custom trigger make's when shooting your baby. First don't run any metal cleaning rod's with brush's down your barrel, the rifeling is very soft and this will damage it. GooGone cleaner, a couple cleaning patch's and line trimmer to run them through. You want to run a few tin's of pellet's through to season the barrel, different brand's and type's also to see what your baby like's to shoot. Check all your stock screw's to make sure thier tight, the two forstock screw's and the screw which hold's the trigger guard on also hold's the back of the action to the stock. If you don't plan on tuning her I wouldn't try to put lube's into her anywhere other then a very small amount's on the cocking linkage if that. The wrong lubes may hurt more then help. Shoot her to get the dieseling settled down and see how she feel's from there. I'm sure I missed something, more used to doing it then explaining it hehehe so I hope some of our other great member's will jump in and give some good advice also. Ed

Welcome to the GTA Forums Jerry,

You have found A GREAT PLACE TO BE AT !!!

Do everything Ed (SHADOW) said !

Then clean the scope rails and the scope mounts and bolts, then wipe down the scope barrel where the mounts will be placedwith alcohol. Some of our members use blue locktite on the scope rails and mounts, andon all the bolts. Let it sit overnight to set.

Then enjoy, shoot until seasoned.

Now I had my Gamo 890 for eight years, I played with the trigger, I stoned the trigger parts and areas around the trigger, and made a Great trigger shoe that helped a lot. But NOTHING ever came close to the GRT-III trigger, I now shoot my Gamo as often as I can, because that triggermakes me want to, it is Sweet !!!! Itis the best money that I have ever spent, and I don't get commissions !

Ask any question that you have ! There is never a dumb question here .

I hope to see you here often !

Bill

thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it.  About stuffing it with memory foam...would that add enough weight, or should I go with something heavier?  What's better?  I'm not a muscle builder, but I'm not a weakling either.   I don't think I'll mind lugging around a heavier rifle...(it only weighs what? 7 pounds...I think I can handle adding a fair bit of weight to that).  For now, I've added the foam...and it doesn't seem a bit heavier.  I haven't shot it yet, so I'll test it out tomorrow.

I guess I have no other choice but to get the GRT-III...I do have a question though, does it only come in that brass yellow color?  I'm a bit shallow and would like to keep the black/gray color scheme going...

Also, I don't know the mechanics of the rifle, so, how is the stock removed to get to the trigger assembly...I noticed that in the instructions for the trigger, this part wasn't mentioned (understandably so considering the trigger fits in many rifles).  Is it just those two torx screws and the trigger guard assembly screws?

I also read that the GRT-III makes it a true 2-stage trigger.  I know this is a dumb question, but what does that mean?  I read up on what two stage triggers are, but I guess from my personal experience, I can't feel it with the big cat - and I shouldn't expect to from what I hear.  Can someone describe it to me?

yeps, just he two screws up front and only the rear screw on the trigger guard, really. becareful not to loose the little roller on the cocking lever guide  if it should fall off the pin wich it sits on.
did you make sure if your new scope can handle a springers recoil? you don't want to spend a lot of money on a nice one and have the springer shake its innards loose.

it's a leapers scope and I got it from pyramyd.com so I'm assuming that it was made for air rifles, right?

the roller you're talking about...What's it look like so I can keep an eye out for it?  I also read that I have to watch out for the small glide.   Where are these and is there a way to position the rifle so that I don't drop them.  If they do happen to fall out, are they simple to put back?  Like, is it obvious where they have to go?  I know this isn't rocket science, but is this a tough job or can anyone with some mechanical ability do it?

You could always wrap the memory foam around small amount's of lead etc. until it feel's comfortable to you. Ed

if you have the gun on its back to take the screws out, leave it in that position,  pull the stock off, on the belly of the action, you'll see the cocking arm lever and  its guide rail. the roller should be on the left side. most of the time its secured in psition with a lubricant and sometimes it isn't. there will be a tiny washer/spacer between the roller and the cocking lever also. in this area you'll also see the sliding levers plastic wear shoe.  if it it should fall out, the roller goes on the little peg. if you slightly cock the barrel just enough to unlock it, the wear shoe goes on the first notch on the underside of the  lever.

I have a question.  The scope I got isn't an AO...it comes in either a 35 or 100 yards parallax models, and I think I got the 100 yard one.  I probably won't be shooting distances greater than 25 yards until summertime, but I was wondering, how much harder is it going to be to shoot accurately at anything short of 100 yards...like 20-35 yards? I should have gotten for the AO model...I can't remember why I didn't...

The way I understand AO is that it can cause your aim to be off somewhat.  But on top of than that, anything within 100 will be out of focus, especially things close up if your parallax is set for 100 yards.  If you sight your gun in at 30 or 40 yards it will hit there despite the AO, you're just going to have to deal with focus issues.  Even the scopes that came with our Gamo guns are less than perfect without AO.  At 20 yards targets look a bit blurry on 9X, decent at 3X.  God forbid you attempt to shoot closer than 20 yards on 9x, things will be bad out of focus.  You'd be way ahead of the game if you could get an AO or at least a scope set for a range closer to what you can shoot.
Here's a link to "All About Scopes" found in the library link at the top of the forum page.  It has a very good explanation of what parallax is and how it affects you.

boo...I just got my scope today and I was excited as hell to get it on, zero it in and get to shootin shi....stuff...one problem though...the high profile mounts that are required for the scope THAT I ORDERED WITH THE SCOPE weren't in the box...probably have to wait another week to get the damn things...I hate waiting.

got the grt trigger today and put in (correctly I hope) and I gotta say, first time I shot it, I thought I shot the rifle with my mind.  I barely put my finger on the trigger and before I knew it, the pellet was in the target.  Took me a couple of shots to restrain myself enough to feel the second stage, which I can clearly feel now.  I have a question though, obviously, there were some pieces that were going to be left out.  I have four total for the big cat: the trigger, the adjustment screw, a spring, and a little fat peg....is that what I should have left?
