I use Crosman wadcutters [.177] and some others, and usually get nice round holes in the target from them, but occasionally, I get a tear instead of a hole. I use a corregated plastic backing board that seems to work fine.
I read somewhere this is caused by a pellet either having a bad form and not flying true, or coming off from a bad crown and tumbling.
Is there any truth to this?
Sometimes I get a lot of tears, and I wonder, if it's true, should look more closely at my crown.?
-
It depends on whether the accuracy is falling off. A tumbling bullet will spiral so it could impact anywhere on the paper. A bad crown will consistently cause bad groups and you would see that from the first. Nothing would shoot well in it. Accuracy is your best measure. If you're getting consistent groups, don't worry about it.

I shoot the S1k at 22-23 yards most of the time.
I get 2-3 tight, then a bunch all over, then 3-4 tight, and then they fly 3-8 inches away, sometimes off the target. At sometime they fly all over the place. I get several tears over 50 shots. These tend to be fliers, but not all the time.
My SSupreme is much better and much more consistant, so I hope I'm not that bad a shooter.
I changed scopes with the SS, and the same grouping and behavior as concerned with "fliers".
Sorry to dump, but I get very frustrated.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

maybe I am missing something, but let me ask the silly question:
Have you tried different pellets?
-
many
gamo hunters, and crosman premiers and wadcutters seem best.
Raptors are the worst.
-
You never said which gun your shooting
-
I think the first line says "S1k", which, I believe, implies .177, as the "ShadowSupreme" is the .22 version, from which I took the scope to see if it was the problem.
Unless I made an incorrect assumption and left that unclear.
If so, I'm sorry.

Hello,
Is the barell clean and all scope and stock screws tight ?

Yep, and yep, loctited :)

-=ed,
I would try to find a pellet that didn't tear the target. If you can do that, then you can work on the accuracy. Good luck...

Hey, Ed,
How many pellets through your Shadow? I'm currently using a freinds Shadow, since my CFX is at DaTuna's and I was going through withdrawals. This thing probably has less than 500 shots on it, and it also throws some tumblers, as well as some inconsistant groupings. I'm sure some of it's just me, this shoots way different from a CFX! But maybe it's just a wear thing. Also, I think I got my freinds Shadow to settle down with some JSB Exacts. Both the Exacts and the Match Diabolo S100's shoot extremely well in my CFX, and it looks like the Shadow is going to like them too. So if you haven't tried the JSB's, I highly recommend them. BTW, is it just me, or does the Shadow seem to kick more, and be more hold sensitive, than the CFX? Any of you guys out there that have both, I'd like to hear. Thanks, and good luck, Ed.

It's got maybe 1500-2000 rounds thru it. Everything is tight, but I feel kind of iffy about the scope.
I'm sure some of it is me, but I shoot the Shadow Supreme much better. I can get it to send the pellets down the same groove. I could consistently put it in a 1" circle at 22.5 yards. I changed this scope over to the S1k, with little improvement as I see it.
The S1k seems to work for a while, and then get all "super-sensitive" on me, fliers coming all over the place and/or entry point shiftingafter a run of good, careful shots.
I shoot Crosman Premiers and Wadcutters usually, along with GAMO hunters and Match. I dally with others too, but until I figure what my problem is with this gun, I'll try to stay with these
This really hammers out my fragile ego. :0 :0 :0 8) 8) 8) :) :) :)

Just a thought about tears.....
If you're printing your own targets, regular printer/copier paper won't punch a hole. It'll generally tear more. Buy some pre-made targets and you'll notice that the paper feels different, kinda like newsprint.
Accuracy is a whole 'nuther deal that, unfortunately, I can't help you with 'cuz I'm a newbie and kinda suck!
