: Woodchucks Are Stirring :)
: longislandhunter March 21, 2008, 09:38:30 AM

The other day I took a leisurely walk through the duck farm and while I didn't find any pests to shoot I did find active sign of the local woodchucks stirring from their winter slumber. Several burrow sites showed sign of active digging, with large amounts of newly excavated dirt piled outside the burrow mounds. This afternonn while driving to work I saw a large woodchuck lying on the side of the road. Unfortunately it had been killed by a car, but he was out and about trying to cross a major road,,,, more sign of the large brown "targets" getting active :)

On my next trip to the duck farm I'm gonna spend a large part of my time trying to find a G-hog or 2 to harvest. Would be nice if I could bag one with my new .22 Discovery PCP :)

Just wait, you will see an aftermarket power adjuster for the end of the gas tube on the Disco.

I saw a dead one a week ago smack in the middle of my lane on a local road 1/2mi. from my house, and it wasn't even spring yet!

I 'm ready for them but I don't see any signs of live G-hogs around the holes on my property.  I 'm afraid I was right last year.  They all fell prey to the 350.  I hope some new ones decide to migrate and take over the old burrows, we 'll see in late summer when some of them might get chased away by their parents.

On a another good note, my property is full of squirrels again!  I saw 4 of them together and it looks like they are new comers moving in.  I say this because they were not afraid of me at all.  I walked outside to get the mail and all 4 of them continued about their business not more than 10yds away, in the middle of the lawn, not even close to the safety of a tree.  The nearest tree was about 20yds out!  Previously the ones that had watched me bag one of their friends knew well to keep away from me or go to the opposite side of the tree as soon as I opened a window or walked outside.  These guys are running around like they own the place and like I 'm not even there.

BTW, later one of them came near the living room window and my son pointed him out because we were sitting there there looking at and enjoying the plethora of robins, mocking birds and Chicadees on our front lawn (no bird feeder or anything).  The grey was no more than 10ft away.  We opened the window and threw out some shelled peanuts.  He ran over right away, smelled them, and left them alone!  WTH?  I thought they liked peanuts.  Is it maybe because they were lightly salted?  We usually get the 5lb bag of Planters lightly salted peanuts from Costco.  Maybe salt harms them or turns them off..  Any ideas why they walked away from peanuts?

This morning I saw allot of nutters rustling in the under cover and around the pine trees on the southeast side of my property. This afternoon I walked out the front door and there were three adult size nutters just sitting between the pine trees on the other side of my house. Walked to the car and looked up and two more were scurrying across the power lines over the street..:) Yesterday I dug out my riding lawn mower and took a trip out back of my house. Must of went a full mile into the narrow paths between trees and wild berry bushes. Saw allot of fresh mounds of dirt along the way. Like Jeff, I can hardly wait till the next couple months to come. We all should have lots of pics to show..:)
