It has been a long dry spell here in the high desert but this week I saw young jack rabbits around the house. No cotton tails but I will let the jacks get a bit bigger and then try to hold myself to one or two at a time. Last year they were over 18" long and fat. We had four good rains (almost 8 inches - our normal here) and there is lots of green to eat for them. Dove are nesting all over the place and the quail are moving back in also. Sure wish that the dove that do not migrate here in our part of the world were not listed as migratory, I just don't like hunting with a shotgun much anymore since I started shooting air rifles.

Hey Bob,
Sounds like you're gonna have a bunch of great targets hopping around in no time at all :)
I sure wish I had jackrabbits round here :(
I got plenty of cottontails but sure would like to be able to shoot "giant" rabbits. :)
Lookin forward to your next posts.... I know what you mean about the shotgun..... since getting into air rifles I think I've only taken my shotguns out of the gun safe 2 or 3 times and then when I shot them and heard the gosh awful NOISE they make I longed for my air rifles once again :)
Besides,,,, small game hunting with the air rifles has served to make me a better all around hunter. Had to learn to rely on a greater level of stealth, tracking skills, patience and stalking skills.

I also don't know why we can't hunt dove with an air rifle in California. What seems odd is that it is ok to hunt quail and turkey with them.

I could be very, very wrong here, David, but I THINK the mourning dove is considered a migratory game bird, whereas turkey and quail probably are not. The Federal regulations related to migratory game birds, just like ducks and geese, provide for more limitations than the state's regulating body.
Somebody please tell me if I'm wrong. I'm too lazy to look it up right now LOL!
