: Scope Issue on my CFX???
: fisherdude April 18, 2008, 01:12:27 AM
In sighting in my new scope, I found that while dead on at 10 yards, it was printing several inches to the left at 65 yards.
Correcting at 65 yards moved it to the right somewhat at 10 yards.  This is not a problem I have encountered before on any rifle.  There was virtually no wind.  I decided that either the barrell is bent or misaligned with the receiver or the rifle was being canted.   I happened to look through the scope from the front (a new BSA 3X12-44 AO) and the cross hairs are clearly not aligned squarely with the scope body.  They are several degrees out of square.  Not from mounting on the rifle, but the scope appears to have been assembled incorrectly.
I think that this could this have caused me to cant the rifle and drift my shots to one side.  Any other thoughts on what could be causing my shots to not be in line with the rifle?

Hey fisherdude, it sounds like a scope problem for sure. If your scope tube is mounted level, level, level but the cross hairs aren't  that scope needs to go.

Yup the internals are moving around, or done moved and that will drive you mad in sighting your baby in. Makes for a nice looking glass though.Ed

One thing that I would try is to level the cross hairs and set up on a good sandbag. Then dial Up and down only and make sure that the X-hair only moves up and down and not diagonally. If it does, you have a scope problem.

Between 10yds and 65yds were you changing the elevation clicks? If so, you can discover funkyness when the elevation setting is at its extreme of travel (and some scopes will just keep on clicking even though the hairs don't move!) What happens is the internals (erector tube and reticle) get pushed up agains the roof or floor of the scope tube. Elevation settings can start to cause windage changes because the internal tube is trying to follow the curvature of the scope tube. This then comes back out when you change elevation settings. I don't know this is happening to you, but I had to use a drooper mount on my CFX 22 as I ran out of elevation adjustment.....sorry if that made no sense....

fisherdude,  I just recently mounted the BSA 3-12x44AO on my Shadow 1000 and I noticed the same problem.  The cross hairs are not square with the scope body.  They are off by several degrees.  If I level the cross hairs then the windage & elevation knobs are visibly not square with the gun.  I have only zeroed the scope at about 12 yards and have not tried to shoot at longer distances yet.  Did you try the procedure that pfft recommended?  Do you plan to return the scope?

I havent' tried what he said.  I have a thing about holding manufacturers responsible for the quality of what I pay for.  I didn't pay with a bad check and I don't want a bad scope!  I am planning to send the scope back.  my holdup is that I had another scope (the 4X one that came on the gun) and when I put it on, it wouldn't group at all.  I tapped it on the side and it actuallly rattles.  It is toast!.  So I put the 4-12X44 AO back on and tilted it a little the opposite direction to level it up (although it is not level).  It works better - I just hate to be "gunless" while waiting for my scope to return.  Maybe I can put the open sites back on or buy another scope. Then I would have to get anogher gun when I got my scope back.  What a cycle!

have you tried optically centering the scope? It relieves stress on the springs and many scopes thought bad can be repaired by doing this.
