: Polymer Barrel OD?
: hiroller April 23, 2008, 10:28:50 AM
I'm fixing to order a custom brake for one of my Gamos, but don't have a caliper to take a precise OD measurement of the barrel.  Does anyone here with the newer Gamos (fluted polymer bull barrels) have a caliper and can take a measurement for me?   I initially thought it was 3/4" but it looks like it may be a hair larger.  Thanks!

I measured the OD a while back as I was planning on making a laser mount that would hold the laser right @ the muzzle to see how the laser spot jumped around wildly on the target at the moment of firing.

That project went by the wayside after I decided to remove Gamo's spring preload  - the rifle lost about 150fps but the shootability of the rifle increased to the point where I can stand, unrested, and shoot 3/4" 10-shot groups at 25yds, 9 times outta 10.

This is completely adequate for me and I've given up tinkering with that thing - it's as good as it's going to get, I think.

In response to your query, the hole I was going to mill for the laser mount was 0.800", about an inch or so back from the muzzle.
The plastic coating is soft enough that 50 thou either way isn't going to make any real difference.

Good Luck with your project!

Ya those polymer barrels are always out of round and never measure the same through out the length of barrel. I will not make muzzle brakes for them because of the irregular size. But thats not to say it cannot be done, but not by me..:)

Well, you could always unhitch the barrel and chuck it in your 4-jaw lathe. In about 5 minutes you could have that inch at the muzzle turned down to a size that YOU want.

It's always easier to remove mat'l from the outside than it is to bore, i think.

That's pretty much how i'd do it it if i were so inclined.

Cheers.
