I have an old Model 62 Chinese springer in .177 that I bought at a flea market new for $12 around 10 years ago. I used it for plinking and dispatching a few problem varmits. It has been setting around in closets and barns through several moves and all the lubricant just about everywhere on the gun was dry. It set out on the porch for a while and got damp and there is a little rust on the outside. I was sure it wasn't worth fixing up and I was going to toss it in the scrap metal bin at work. But on the way out the door, I got to thinking about all the postings on this site about tuning and fixing and I thought "What the heck! The worst I could do is trash it" which is what I was about to do any way so I took it out back and striped it down. Inside the barrell loked OK after cleaning. I found a bar clamp that worked perfect for a spring press and it came apart nicely. Everything was dry inside and there were a lot of burs and rough spots which I polished out with fine sand paper. The seal was basically a leather plug but it was not too chewed up so I just cleaned it up and put it back. I didn't know what to lube it with. I was concerned because I know that dieseling can be an issue so I smeared a little teflon based swimming pool pump lubricant I had on the seal and sprayed some white lithium grease on the spring and other rear parts after I got it back together.
I may not have made the best choices in lubricants, but she fires off great now. I wouldn't have thought to undertake job this if I hadn't been reading this site. Thanks for the chatter guys! I will try to get some pictures soon and post a photo.
