I have a Hunter Sport and noticed that the barrel does not have a crown. Has anyone ever did a crown on this and was there an improvement?? Thanks... FN

Doesn't the Hunter Sport have the polymer bull barrel? If so, I've been curious about this. Can them plastic ones be re-crowned?
-
A plastic barrel? I didn't know they had this. But I don't understand why you'd want a crown on a steel barrel but not on a plastic one. I'll check back on this thread to see if anyone answers that. I'm interested in learning.

It's a steel barrel surrounded with the plastic. Like a Benji has a small brass barrel but this one is steel... FN

I guess I will have to try and attempt it. First I have to plan so I do it right.... FN

Looks like the plastic that wraps the steel barrel/insert is crowned. Here's a shot of mine off a varmint hunter, and most of the other polymer barreled gamos I've seen are the same. Is yours not like this?

Mine looks like it is stepped, not really tapered. The steel part just looks like cut off tubing. I'll take a picture and post it in a few minutes.. FN

I haven't seen those before, but you think maybe cleaning it up a bit and mounting a custom brake or even a light weight shroud would help with accuracy? I don't know - maybe someone else here can chime in and offer suggestions...

It just don't repeat it's shots well. Tried it with different scopes thinking that was the problem but does not seem to be. I am using good pellets, not cheapies... I have another scope coming and will try that. I will just keep trying different things. Maybe it is just not broken in good yet but I feell it should be. It's had enough shots thru it. Thanks.. I did a crown on my big cat when I first got into this form and used the valve grinding compound system with a round head screw it came out fine. howie it did help the cat too.

Update:
I worked on my Hunter Sport. I crowned the barrel. Opened it up and everything was dry. The spring was bent. I honed and polished everything and put in another spring I had on hand the same length (10 inch). Put in thrust washers (oillite). Lubed with proper lubes and tar. Results, no twang and don't jump as much. Chrony results were about 50 fps less but the smoothness makes up for that. Shoots about 800 instead of 860 which it was shooting, it does shoot Hunters at 864 fps. It is grouping much better now, quick results were about the size of a quarter at 15 yards. Once I tune in the scope and take more time aiming it should be much better. I will have to see what pellets it likes now.. Frank

Awesome Frank - I was just wondering about your rifle. How did you crown it? Got any pics?
-
I am not completely finished with the crown yet, needs more polishing. I used a round head screw as mentioned in the forum here with course and then fine valve grinding compound. It does go kind of slow. When I do finish I will post a picture. Don't know if the finish really makes a difference but don't want it to rough... Frank
