Because it is hot outside I was shooting from inside my house with my office door propped open. The AC is going full blast while I cool the neighborhood.I am shooting at a target that is exactly 26 yards from my indoor shooting rest. I am dialed in with my Beeman R-9 .177. When it happenend! Just as I was about to send another 7.9gr cpl through that small black hole 26 yds away a Groundhog suddenly appeared in the picture.Cripes! he shouldn't have done that.I have been very merciful lately to the groundhogs that live around my place.Have not had a particular reason to shoot them lately as they haven't caused me any problems and I have plenty of deer meat still in the freezer.Well it looks like I will be enjoying a half grown whistle pig for my dinner today or tomorrow.Yep I did it. The half grown pasture pig offered me a succinctly clear broadside profile. The crosshairs found their mark right in the brain pan and Bang-Flop.His tail quivered for a few seconds but that was all.So I can say for a fact that even a R-9 177 with a 7.9gr pellet will get the job done on a groundhog when you drill him in the brain at 25 yards.Post mortem indicates complete pass through with the pellet entering just below the left ear and exiting in almost the same place opposite side.Sorry no pic's today as my last girlfriend cleaned me out of camera equipment. ( The epitome of high maintenance) Should be tender and tasty. I'm thinking battered and fried with biscuits and gravy.Dave.

Nice shot Dave! Lets us know how that young g-hog tastes.
Yeah an R9 is definitely up to the task with proper shot placement. My Diana 36 .177 (same powerplant as 34) has very similar power to the R9 and I have taken about 9 g-hogs with it this summer using 7.9gr CPHP's and 8.3gr Superdomes. Some were full-grown+ (1 was 15.6lbs) and got pass-through on a couple of them at about the same distance.

This is my favorite, just getting to know a new shooter, when this one got brave. First shot of the mornin and he thought he could sit on top of my 33yrd box, wrong. I thought this post needed a pic, hehe. One day I'll learn how to shoot, I hope.

Mike I remember that now. The little bugger just jumped up on your target. Now that I think about it I've had at least a handful of occassions over the years when something tasty just happened to make an appearance while I just happened to be shooting from a rest.Today's groundhog surprised me the most because he walked into my scopes sight picture. I didn't see him coming until I saw him @ 12X.

Nice shot with the R9 Progun!! shot placement is everything and we all know you did your part. Wow battered and fried, now that sounds good. I bet he is going to be a tasty critter for sure

That's great shooting....shot in the head at 25 yards = 1 dead g-hog.

Culinary update. Skinned and quartered just like a squirrel. Used scissors to remove ribs cutting parallel to the spine leaving only the meat on the back minus the ribs. Parboiled for just a few minutes saving broth for the gravy. Cooled the meat under cold water and battered with seasoned flour and skillet fried with the lid on on low to medium heat. Used the broth and flour to make gravy to go with biscuits.Accompanied with sweet southern ice tea, and peach preserves on a buttered biscuit for dessert.Hind quarters were as big as rabbit legs and tender. 4 stars.
