ooooh, he 's raiding your garden Phil!!  Com'on you gotta do something about that!!  :)  Is that his butt in the pic?

I can offer my pest control services if you want, for free  :-)  Just give me a window I can sit behind, with a good view of the garden and I 'll guarantee he 'll be doing his last dance in a matter of a few hours :)   Just kidding, I wouldn't want to deprive you of all the fun now.. :-)

Actually you know I have found out that even sitting in the car is pretty safe.  When my phone line was down last week, I went to the car, turned on the A/C and called Verizon on my cell phone.  The house was pretty hot as we had just gotten back from vacation and the car was still pretty cool.  I was on hold with the phone company for a while and got transferred a couple of times..  After about 15min. I saw a g-hog come out of nowhere!  He kept eating without noticing me and getting closer and closer.  He would put his head up and look my direction probably because he could hear the motor and the fan running, but I wasn't moving much..  He ended up coming as close as about 7yds to the car!  I had the engine running with the A/C but they must be used to listening to cars, don't know.  I 'm pretty sure he had spotted me a couple of times and was a little cautious but he felt I wasn't a threat inside the car.  I could have easily put the passenger window down a few inches and put a hole in his brain, if I had an airugn.. but I got him later that day so it was all good  :-)

I was watching today and the sun hits like that about 9:30 -10:00, But I have no real good vantage point its off the corner of my house 10 yards away but cant see verry well. Ill get him If its the last thing I do, He is taking tomatos green one -two bites and leaving them. Now I have made it harder for him to burrow under the fence buy burying more fence 1.5 feet down. So he has to work a little harder.Ill get him

I think if you want to get him sooner....you'll need to set up a blind so he can get used to it....then one day you park yourself inside it and wait for him.....then POP goes the weasel.  heh heh

Phil that really sucks that you can't get a shot at him 10yds away because of the angle, the sun, and all that.

Unfortunately 1.5ft is not much for a groundhog.  Some have been known to dig as deep as 7ft I read somewhere!  But 3-4ft is nothing unusual for them.  I had the plumber out here a few weeks ago and he was snaking out the pipe about 25yds away from the house and before I even mentioned anything, he said "you know, g-hogs can mess up your sewer pipes too because they dig under them and they can bend over time because there is no support under them" and even crack(!), etc.  I said but I can see through the tap that the main pipe is down more than 3ft.  He said they dig that far down and deeper all the time and he has seen g-hog tunnels go under the pipes when they dig up to repair pipes and some pipe damage was unquestionably caused by the ground dwellers!

Another thing you should know, is that when a farmer or someone puts up a fence post or any other post into the ground, the g-hog rushes over to dig hole under it or at the base and around it.  Sometimes they just look for excuses to dig another hole and tunnel..
BTW, rabbits will bite several tomatoes, fruit, whatever and leave them to go on to the next one.  I don't think that's g-hog behavior but I could be wrong.  G-hogs usually chew on the roots under the ground or eat the leaves off the plant or the vegetable itself.  I think it's a good possibility that might be a rabbit you took a picture of.  I wonder if there 's some kind of animal expert in a University or something you can send the pic to, so they can identify the culprit.
Have you found any g-hog holes in your garden or on the perimeter of the fence?
