: How well do you know your favorite springer?
: Black Mamba July 16, 2008, 01:59:10 PM

Hello all!

I just got done doing some shooting practice when I was summoned over to Bruceland for beverages in the "Manly Garage" AKA "The Dungeon". When I was done, I came back to my shooting bench, grabbed an empty soda can and filled it with water. I then proceeded to walk said can out to 63 yards (in the sanctioned Bruceland target range) and gently lay it upright.  After a brisk walk back to my bench I looked at the can and decided 2 mil dots would suffice. I loaded a Crosman Dome (7.8grain) into my self tuned RWS 34 and adjusted my Center Point scope to 16 power and proper objective. I took two breaths and gently squeezed the trigger. The pellet left the gun and hit the can right where I wanted it to, knocking over the can. When I retrieved the can, sure enough, it had a clean through hole 1" from the bottom of the can and dead center left to right and there was but a wisp of water left in it.

Now, don't misunderstand me. I'm not bragging. I'm actually curious to hear your responses.

Do you folks have that one gun you just KNOW you will hit your target at regardless of the distance due to familairity and practice? Do you have a gun that always ends up making you glad you bought it?

Mine is a remanufactured RWS 34 in .177 that I tuned myself. It is without a doubt the most accurate springer I own.

Lemme know about yours.

Greg I know what you mean, what works for me is a toss-up between my THEOBEN .22 ELIMINATOR &  CRUSADOR .20...When I am in absolute doubt, one the those two will assure me confidence.......Than get the job done!

When the lead absolutely, positively has to be on target, on time............... It's my HW50 or My BSA Lightning XL

Guess it's an old Webly Osprey....been shooting it for about 30years, so pretty well know where the pellet's going.  Not my most accurate rifle...certainly not the fastest...but it stays stable from day-to-day, year-to-year, with no real warm-up to get on target.

I bought the R*9 in the .20, I try to shoot it at least once every day, and I've not been disappointed yet.
Every shot hits it's mark, and I'm so glad that I bought it ,this is a great gun by a real long shot.

The R9 Goldfinger .20, but I think only because I have spent the most time shooting it.  And my "confidence interval" is only out to about 100 ft, max.  At that distance, standing and shooting off hand, I can hit a tablespoon spinner about 50% of the time now.  At 10 to 20 yards, maybe 90% of the time.

But here is a counter question:  How long (or perhaps, for how many rounds fired) do you think someone really has to shoot a springer to "know" the gun and so be able to shoot it almost by reflex?

I think the time required is longer than I have been air gunning, perhaps a year or more.  And I think that it requires practice shooting the springer over that interval at least once or twice a week for at least 25 to 50 rounds  per session -- say, around 2500 rounds minimum -- in different conditions (wind, lighting, angle of trajectory) to achieve.  Target range shooting at set distances on a flat trajectory will only take you so far.

What say you professionals in the military service?

Mine is the Beeman/Webley Vulcan. While I sure can't do what you did, it's still the most comfortable and easiest to shoot rifle I have. I've taken many a pest with head shots over the 20 or so years I've had it.

My favorite will have to be the R9 GF in .20 ,but  it is so hard to pick just one. Then my FWB124D hasn't let me down yet either. I just purchased an R7 and that is now definitely one of my favorite guns for back yard plinking and grackle shooting.

Easy one,,,,,, either one of my Goldfingers..    Maybe it's psychological on my part but whenever I aim either of them at a target I just KNOW I'm gonna hit it.    God I love those rifles  :)

Why, YES!  That would be the Gamo Hunter Elite.  Amongst the one's in my arsenal that Gamo(of all things) shoots more accurate than all the rest of em'.  I've set-up a wood back-stop on a fence post and quite often put up sheets of 9mm shell-case print-outs from minisniping.org using push pins.  At 35 yards, having shot each 9mm casing print I decided to go for the thumb tacks holding the paper to the wood.  That cheeseball Gamo of mine nailed 3 outa 4.  Just two clicks...   and I got the 4th.

I know this gun very very well.

My .177 CFX is still my go to gun if I want to shoot the bugs in the yard or trim the maple tree.

Hey Tommy,

In the military, we had a shooting range book, and at every range we fired from added that information to the book. We learned wind estimation and the effect it has on our bullets, and the proper adjustment to correct it. We learned the affects of mirage, head winds, and tail winds, and all that information, was entered into our range book. We learned range estimation and we also learned the effects of humidity on our shots, and it sure does effect rounds fired at 300 - 800 yards ! Also the effects of up hill and down hill shooting

When all was said and done, most of that information was committed to memory, but you always kept that book close to your heart, for those times you realy needed it !

So, shoot you rifle at each yardage that you feel that you will need, and make notes ! of the number of clicks required to center your shots at each distance, up and right or left, with a specific rifle, then you have a very good point or reference to refer to, for each distance !

Now ! My goto pellet rifle is My Sheridan C9 .20 cal., I know every range and number of pumps required to dispatch all of the varmints, in my outback yard :) But I am learning my Beeman R-9 GF .20 cal. very quickly, she is becoming the love of my life ! I have only one problem, I can't control the power of the pellet, as I can with my pumper, but the HW-30, is so sweet as a bird gun ! But I will always love my Sheridan !

That is a hard one to answer..........but I will say my old model RWS model 36. I have many, many kills with that rifle. It has never let me down. Best of luck.

When I am in the mood to take the lit end of a cigarette off at 35 yards, I grab my Tuna tuned Whisper Deluxe, .177.  I know, I know, I hear all the moaning out there from all you German Hussy lovers!! But this thing shocks me every time I shoot it. Got a real nice Center Point on it too, but I gotta give the credit to the Fish.

I am not sure I could pace off 63 yards and KNOW I am going to hole the soda can. This is because of the dave component.

The dave component is at its best later, in the less caffeinated portion of the day, and possibly after 1 or 2 mildly flammable lubricants (in the dave, NOT the weapon). I have distinctly noticed poorer performance in the mornings.

When I try it, and soon I will, I will reach for the MP513 first.

This odd thing is closest to duplicating the "extension of my will" status of my trusty Browning BPS shotgun, that I never shoot any more, or my Ruger GP100, that I never shoot any more. I can't explain it but it just keeps impressing me, especially at my longer ranges (only 20m at home and it is just getting going at that range). It has a 4-16 BSA. I will bet you that I will cream Mr. Can but I will have to drive back up to the happy hunting grounds to try it at this distance. I wish it were a more exotic thoroughbred from some really cool AG country we have had a declared war with, but it is what it is, and just kills the hell outta stuff.

I think using a .177 might be cheating if there is no wind, but if I was going that route, I would reach for the SS1000H. It is really good and flatter shooting.

I have just not mastered the B26 at the outer ranges yet. It is still stock inside and about ready to go back on the hoist. I have a New Toy on the way that I have high hopes for, but we shall see....
