: July 18, 2008, 03:33:07 AM
im not sure if this is the right forum but here it goes.i have the Gamo Hunter Extreme and i have mounted two different scopes on it and both times i have run out of elevation.i have read that the Gamo Hunter Extreme shouldnt have barrel droop but im starting to wonder.is their a reason this is happening?how do i tell if my gun has barrel droop and how can i fix it?do i need to just shim the scope before i ever mount it?once again thank you all for your help.

Shimming with a piece or two of 35mm film negative might be all you need. Check out the scope section in the library. It would be the quick and easiest way I think. Another alterative would be to purchase an adjustable mount. I bought  a Beeman AM that has given me great results. If your gun has 11mm dove-tails, BSA sells one that is adjustable without removing the mount/scope at all. With the Beeman, you have to remove the mount to adjust for elevation. Check them out!!!! tjk

Sorry, the Beeman AM is model 5039, and the BSA AM is well I couldn't find a model #?!?? PyramydAir sells them both, but I'm sure there are other suppliers that have them too. Dave/Mike (can't remember his name off-hand??!?) at Pamona Air stocks the Beeman I bought, Nice fella to do business with too!! tjk

Hello Robert,

Barrel droop is not something we usually find in Gamo's, there mostly run into with RWS air rifles.

I suspect that you may have a bent barrel, or a barrel seal, that wont allow the barrel to be seated fully.

If you are receiving good groups, than an adjustable scope mount may be your answer. If it's the seal, you can remove it and take a little off, until you have a good fit.

If its a bent barrel, which is not impossible, you can try to straighten it yourself, or send it out for straightening.

Hope this helps !

Bill

First, it is fairly simple to see if you have droop.  Usually, you can just look along the side or top of the cylinder and if the barrel is not pretty close to parallel to the cylinder it should be apparent.  You can also lay a straight edge along the top of the cylinder and measure the gap between the rear of the barrel and the straingt edge and measure again near the muzzle.  If there is very much droop in the barrell, it will be apparent.

There doesn't have to be zero droop for the rifle to shoot, but if you are out of elevation adjustment, droop is the prime suspect.

I know that the thought of bending a barrel is scary, but that's how guns were sighted in during the civil war.  So, I deal with droop by bending the barrell instead of shimming the scope.  To me shimming a scope is way too complicated and even when it is done, and I look down the side of the rifle, I can see the droop.  I can't stand barrel droop! To bend the barrel, I just lock the breech in a vice or wedge it somehow and bend it using a pipe slipped over the barrel for a lever.  The barrels on chinese airguns are pretty soft and surprisingly easy to bend.  I bend, look down the barrell to see if it looks right, then maybe bend again.  Just a little push or pull will bend it a little.  I have made various jigs, but to me its pretty easy just to do it by hand.

I don't understand why the manufacturer would let any rifle would leave the factory with droop.  It seems the simplest Quality Control system would catch this.  Even just looking along the side of the rifle would catch the bad ones.  And a gage would be easy to build.  I have owned 2 Gamo rifles and no droop, I have owned 3 Chinese rifles and 3 had obvious droop.

I just use a bubble level, (easy with a magnet built in). Place it in the scope mount area and support the rifle to level. Then simple, place it on the barrel and you will see if it has droop.. Frank
