This weekend my son walked out to throw the trash and on his way back in he found out he had just walked by a prairie rattler sitting on the cool porch. He ran inside yelling "DAD there's a snake on the porch!". I ran outside with my trusty 12guage to make quick work of him and realized that said snake was coiled up in the middle of my "all" concrete porch. With no way to shoot him without hitting the house I decide to take a low tech approach and use a shovel. With a superfast strike and angry disposition the snake told me that was a bad idea (by the way did you know snakes are really fast on concrete?). Well Jake and I were at a standstill and suddenly a thought passed through my head. "What can I use that won't punch a hole in the house but is accurate enough to shoot a quarter sized head at about 10 meters?" The Marksman instantly pops in my head I had just been shooting it the day before at coke bottle tops. I ran to get it and get some of my trusty Crossman Destroyers and by that time Jake had decided that he was going to stay on that porch no matter what my son did. Well with a dull pop I sent that Destroyer towards the snake and thud!! I didnt think I got him so I just watched for a second and loaded up with another pellet. Suddenly the snake uncoiled and started the death dance that I've seen many an animal do and I knew the pellet hit home. I walked up with shovel in hand and sure enough there between the eyes was a hole just the size of a pellet. I didnt remember to get a picture but I did get his rattler before I threw him in the burn pile.

Rocky, you were cool as a cucumber to make that shot when it counted. Not exactly a charging lion or cape buffalo but still plenty of potential trouble. At close range if you missed things could have gotten a bit dicey. You didn't say if you skinned the snake to save for a hat band.Maybe 'cause you live in Texas you already have plenty of hatbands.Just wondered.

Good shot! Can we at least see a picture of the Markman? :-)
It's easy to walk by a snake and not even know you did..
I 've killed several poisonous snakes and I know it's not as easy as people think. The chance that you might get beaten is always on your mind but all your senses seem to function at the fullest (and the hair standing up on your back too) when encountering one of them and it's like survival instinct kicking in, especially when my younger sister about 8yrs old at the time, almost go bit by one.. I had watched her get bit by a non-poisonous (which we didn't now at the time) garden/garter snake and my dad took her to the hospital when she was about 4, so I was all over that copperhead with a vengance the 2nd time around. That was my first one. I had made it my mission after that to seek them out and destroy them because my sister was bit so I had developed a hatred for them. Luckily that only lasted about 1 summer. I was only 13-14yrs old at the time, young & stupid. But guess what, if you go looking for them, they are not that hard to find. You 'll be surprised how close to your home copperheads or other venomous snakes can be.. The ones I killed were with a long stick. You must have a strong one to overturn large rocks and logs. The closest one was about 200yds from my parents house in the woods near a lake. For me at the time, it was too close for comfort. Copperheads are plentiful along the Hudson Valley where I live so I 'm always very cautious when I walk through the woods. We also have timber rattlesnakes here which I heard are on the endangered species, so if anyone is going to run into one, it's probably my sister! :-)

I was gonna eat him but It was getting late and I would have had to save him in the fridge and then my wife would have found him and I don't want to imagine what she would have done. She is still mad at me for spilling my homemade ballistic gelatin all over the freezer.
