: What's the best way to cut a thread

I want to thread some stainless steel, internal and external. Any good ideas / advice? or should I just get on with it like mild steel?

Without a lathe that cuts threads, ID and OD. A good tap and die set would work...:) Just my idea.. hehe

I cut them with carbide tool bits on the Walther barrels because of the hardness of the steel, it will eat a tool steel bit before the threads are cut. I worked for Pratt and Whintey years ago on the j79 jet engine and every thing on them is stainless steel or a weldment made of stainless and the only thing that will last is a carbide tool.

Carbide tool bits made for cutting threads are not hard to find at industral supplyl house. You will also need a gauge to set the tool bit  at the proper angle and the tool post has to be at that angle also because when you cut threads you only take metal off one side of the steel when cutting them. You advance the cutter with the tool post not the cross slide feed.

Thanks Rich, better get the lathe gears out then. FYI it's 22mmOD stainless tube, 2mm wall. so I doubt I could turn a tap and die, even if I found the right size!

Rember that with a lathe you can cut any threads per inch you want if your making both parts,I did a tube that is 1 inch id with 32 threads per inch and then made the screw in plug to fit them.

The thing with taps and dies is that if you go with standard sizes you end up with real deep threads 7/8 which is close to the item you want is 9 threads per inch course of 14 threads per inch fine thread which both would be to much for the 2 mm thickness of the tubing.
