: Gamo Pellet Trap Takes A Beating
: Clarkbdragon May 01, 2009, 01:29:24 PM
Purchased a Gamo collapsible pellet trap and after two 10 shot strings with my Gamo 850 and two 10 shot strings with my Daisy Powerline 1000 @ 10 yds this is what it looks like.

It is supposed to be rated for 1000 fps air rifles but I guess the Powerline shooting JSB Exacts at an average of 926 fps for 16 fpe was just more than it could stand. This one almost got me in trouble with the wife :emoticon: .

I just set mine up yesterday, I was able to put 3 Duct Seal bars in mine (which is just perfect).

Hey clark, I filled the back of the funnel with duct seal. I had shot out the backs of all six of my traps. Works great and no noise.

I bought one and thought I had returned it but came across it months later, so decided to try it out.  This with target guns under 700 fps.  The biggest concern, to me, is that the angled piece which deflects the pellet down does not go all the way to the base of the square hole.  If you shoot a bull too low, it could come straight back at you.  Every one in the store was like this.  What I have found works well is I took some plastic grocery bags I had laying around and knotted them up, then stuffed them in.  I was surprised that they captured everything I put in.  Plus, unlike putty, you can pick the pellets out for melting, etc.  In fact, I'm thinking of filling a box with a ton of these just to see if they are effective as fillers.

BTW, those traps are notorious for coming apart when shot with something like a Shadow 1000, especially at ten yards.  Now they don't even offer them spot-welded.  You have to assemble them.

I put a couple of rounds into the pellet trap and although none penetrated, it was pretty dented up. I bought 4 lbs of Duct Seal at Lowes. It fills the Gamo Pellet Trap to just below the rim and folded edges to hold the paper targets.  I then took a metal "L", bolted and screwed the holding attachment to a wooden board. I took a 5 gallon bucket, sat the pellet trap inside, with an old, small  blanket folded and stuffed around and behind it. This works as a back stop, just in case I miss. It works for me. Obviously for this to be effective one has to avoid angled shots into the pellet trap. So, I'll try this out and see how it works out. I put 10 shots into the center, I could see the pellets being held less than an inch down.  I smoothed the putty out and so far, so good.

If this doesn't work out, I'll probably buy the Champion Trap. It's a bit expensive and at 20 lbs the shipping costs are going to add to it. We shall see. I'm using a Gamo Whisper .177, with a Crosman 4.5 mm hunting pellet at 60 feet. I have some Tree Rats who like to get up close. Not a problem with ther scope and some adjustments accordingly. I have some heavy stuff in the gun case but the neighbors might get a bit over concerned.

Here is my pellet trap. A bow target. Don't know how many thousands of pellets I've shot into it noe of them have gone through it yet.

It weighs a LOT more than it used to!!!

I just bought a "Bullet Box" at Cabelas for $50.  It is supposed to be fore .22 rimfire rifles so if it doesn't hold up I don't know what will.

LOL….  That ought to do it.  Thanks for the information. I like it. Let me know how it works out for you.

I went looking and found this on You Tube on your Bullet Box from Cabelas. It’s the how to assemble video. Great stuff you can actually see the thing being assembled and used.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zetbza1qgQU&feature=related

I’d say with the 20lb weight, the size and how it is made. It should work out just fine for you. The Bullet Box at Cabelas looks like a winner. It should be able to withstand a pounding. You can hear the plates clanging. That’s some Heavy Metal.

Considering the Gamo Pellet Trap only weighs in at 1.9 lbs.  Measures 5 ½ x 5 ½ inches at the front and has a 6 inch depth. It’s a light weight.

I paid $16.95 for it. $7.98 in Shipping and Handling, from Amazon.com , plus $9.52 for the Monkey Putty, from Lowes.  That’s $34.45. I doubt I’ll be doing any serious pounding on it. I’m mostly occupied in whacking out the Tree Rat problem.

So, when it comes time to replace it, I’ll keep the Bullet Box in mind.  Here’s a link to the Champion Heavy Duty Metal Trap, another idea.  That looks similar. Only at $72.95 it’s more expensive.

I have a place out in the country where I took the Gamo Whisper .177 to sight it in. I’ve put over 300 pellets through it out there.  I’d hardly try that with the Gamo Pellet Trap.  If I were doing any serious target shooting, in the city, I’d have to move up to a bigger box. It does pay to shop around.

I saw that Champion Bullet Box at BassPro and they are selling it for $95 but I was not going to put that much money out for one.  I was just roaming around at Cabelas cause I had a $25 gift card so the $50 one was an easy pick.  You are right though, they are way too heavy to order online unless you can get a free shipping deal or something.

I heard that they are loud but I will put a sand bag on the back or something inside to kill the sound a bit.  I just got a call from UPS and I am supposed to get my Whisper today!  I don't have my GRT III trigger so I will play around with the original and that way I know what a great upgrade the GRT is.  :-)

Hey.... It works for me.

I'm going to see how long the Gamo Box lasts.  Then when replacement time comes, I'll look around.

Got luck with the Whisper, it's a fun toy, unless you're a tree rat. I don't like having to do the critters in but they're tearing up my shrubs, plants and yard.  The wife put out two bird feeders and they descended like a plague. I'm still using the original but, when a certain fellow gets his feet back under him, I'm considering a tune up plus the GRT III.

Yeah, I am waiting on the tune up as well.  I am going to put in a year with it the way it is and then think about sending it in for a tune up.

Regarding Bullet traps not holding up to pellet strikes.    I made a pellet trap using a 22 inch Disc harrow blade.  It is held in a frame of 2x4s' and 4x4s.  The dished side faces toward the shooter.  The pellets just go splat on impact.  A 6ft by 8ft backstop is behind the trap that is 4 one inch thck boards thick. These are placed in an over lapping pattern inorder to assure that nothing gets through.   Another bullet trap that I use is a 2ft x 2ft plate steel that is 1/2inch  thickness.  Only problem is that it ( with its base) is very heavy .It's Primary use was to register high power rifle hits at 500 yds.  Why did I go through all this trouble?  Because of crappy neighbors  ( and they don't Live close) that are convinced that any one with a 'BB' gun is shooting up the place and cannot wait to call the sheriff on them .

When you get the Gamo Whisper and pop a few rounds into the box, let me know how it goes.

I’ve been shopping around.  Natchez Shooting Supplies has the Bullet Box for $34.86.    Good Price. That Gamo Box just won’t last too long.  I’ll give these guys a call tomorrow and see how much shipping and handling is going to run.

Got the whisper and shot a few shots.  From what I can tell the black paint came of a bit but that is it.  Not sure if it is normal or not but the CPHP I was shooting were flat as could be.  Not much left of the pellet.  The bullet box looks like it will hold up just fine though.  I was shooting at about 10 yards.

LOL….You got it; you just can’t be too safe. With these pellets going over ¼ of a mile, who knows?  I like the armor plating. Whether the neighbors realize it or not though, doesn’t really matter.  You’re covering you backside and can’t be too careful.

When I lived in the country, I had built a firing bream, using some timbers and a sand pit. I wasn’t taking any chances and was firing .38s, 9mm, 40 cal, and .243 rounds. I had a 12 guage means of dealing with vermin and predators.  Living in the city, I have to be more discreet.

All this fuss over some “pellet” rounds may seem a little extreme, to the uninformed. But, I’m always concerned about the “Magic Bullet” or in this case pellet, that bounces around, zings off and does some damage. I could take a 24 oz . Dixie Cup, slap a few pounds of Duct Seal or Monkey Crap in it, lay a target on top, with a ½ inch or 1 inch red dot on it and fire away. But….  Murphy’s Law says that sooner o later something really “stupid “could” happen.

I’ve got a 6 foot privacy fence around my back yard, with houses on all three sides. I’m probably going to get a heavy duty box to be on the safe side.

Have a nice day.

Lots of good information! I've found that squirrels make excellent pellet traps for my .22 Predators.  Assuming I may hit them as badly as I shake now.  Assuming I may see them as badly as the eyesight is getting now.

May have to set the camo tent up in the kitchen, with the dining room bay windows descreened and opened.   BTW, time to see if the armadillo is tearing-up the yard for grubs-n-stuff right now.  Can't shoot it, but I bet I could catch him in stealth-mode, with a big, tough fish net, if I catch him when he jumps.

Thanks for this post. I just bought the bullet trap and because of this post, I watched the Youtube video and saw that I had assembled my Bullet Box wrong. The printed instructions were terrible. The video was of poor quality but good enough for me to see my mistakes. I never looked at the DVD which came with the Bullet Box, just thinking it was on their products. The DVD had the same Youtube video but of a much better quality, so it's put together right now.
The Bullet Box it a great add on to the backyard shooter. Much safer than the Gamo Pellet trap. I spent good money on Gamo targets to fit their pellet trap, now all I have to do is get on line and down load all kinds of targets and a regular sheet of printing paper is all I need to have a great afternoon.
The Bullet Box will take a beating and all of the lead is trapped at the botton so all you have to do it empty it out into a old coffee can to get rid of the waste.

Regards to all,
Paul S.

Glad to hear that these posts helped.  We all are in the same boat, but just sharing some information that can help out someone with a common interest is a "Good Thing"... Yikes that woman drives me nuts.

There's some great stuff on this forum regarding the Whisper and other of their products. I'm still using the Gamo pellet box but will probably get the bigger one later on.

Have a nice day.

I've had the Bullet Box for a few months now, using it in my basement, and this thing is built like a tank. One of the great things about this trap is that I can use printed targets that I've downloaded off the net & do not have to buy specific targets to use with it. I punch paper at  15 yds with a Gamo Whisper & Viper. The only signs of use is that the paint gets chipped off where the pellets hit it. The pellets do flatten out & sometimes little splinters of the pellet will try to fly out but the paper target will stop it most of the time. I am sure that if I would put something on the surface, it would take care of that problem.
