: recommendation for 9 mm pistol
: Jerrycup July 14, 2009, 02:17:44 PM
I've got a Glock 19, but I'm thinking of a new compact (even more compact) pistol to keep under the car seat...

In Texas, there is a new law permitting carry of a pistol in your car as long as it is concealed. Like my Glock, but want to get something cheaper.  Any recommendations?

I guess I could put the G19 in the car and get another pistol to keep at home. I was thinking something more expendable.

Jerry, You might consider the Kel Tech 9mm compact. It's well engineered, American made, with good build quality and function. I have the Kel Tech P32, ultra compact .32 ACP. I'm very impressed with it for a small concealment pistol.

If you're looking for something 1911 style, then Rock Island Armory makes a 1911compact in 9mm. There's also the SIG P220 Carry. But if you're looking for a beater, look for a STAR 9mm. There's also a Tokerov variant in 9mm kurz (.380).

On the higher end of the spectrun is the Beretta PX4 subcompact. They run about $450. And if you like Glock, take a look at the G26.

OOps! If you want CHEAP! I mean CHEAAAAAAP then there's the Cobra Patriot I believe it's called. It's a small buger. 10 round mag, made in the USA. From what I've read, it's a pretty reliable pistol once you install a heavier extractor spring and do a bit of polishing.

I also vote for the Kel Tech.I've got a P38t and it's very compact.I looked at the 9 and it's not much bigger than the 380.I can slip mine in my back pocket no problem.an accurate little bugger to boot. They also have a life time warranty and very good customer service. They'll even send you a new slide spring if you just ask.Go to Ktog .org to learn about them and some good tweeks.

Jerry:

Can't believe you didn't ask me?!  I picked up a Ruger LCP .380 on gunbroker.com.  Perfect pocket pistol/car pistol.  It is Rugers knock-off of the KelTec and should be about a $300-350 item,  depending if new w/ extra mags, vs. used.  If you can find a Sig P239 in 9mm or 40 SW, those are very fine weapons.  Be advised, though -- if you go .380, you won't be able to find ammo unless you have a bro with a sizable stockpile of .380 (and most other) ammo.  Some folks are selling .380's at good prices simply because they can't find ammo.  9mm or 40SW are probably better choices for SD, though, and I have always been partial to SigSauer.

PS:  the Markov is a good suggestion.  I have a local source for the pistol, if not the ammo for the Markov.

Taurus PT111
Kel-Tec PF-9
Kel-Tec P11
Kel-Tec P3AT (380)
Kel-Tec P32 (32)
Bersa Thunder (380)
Ruger LCP (380)
Kahr CW9
Taurus M38 (38 SPL)
Smith & Wesson 442, 637, 638, 642 (38 SPL)

That's about all that comes to mind right now for small but not all are cheap. If its just going to be a truck gun find an old Taurus 4" 38spl. No sence limiting yourself size wise if your not carrying on your hip. JMO

Agree on the size thing.  A .38 revolver would be a good choice.

Honestly, I wouldn't rule out a full-sized .22LR pistol, something like a Browning Buckmark or Ruger Mark III, as a reasonable pistol to leave in the car.  Ammo is cheaper and you get 10 shots per magazine.  Lots of debate about that, I am sure.  The serious self defense bloggers will say 9 mm is the smallest you should consider.  But in a pinch, the best caliber is the one you have in your hand.  And a .22LR in something like a CCI Stinger will out-perform a .25 cal and most .32 cal loads, particularly if you can place your shots well.  Not sure, but they may even give more penetration than a .380 hp.  Most bad guys won't look at you and think "what the heck, it's only a .22" . . .

Thanks for all the replies. I will review online tonight and maybe make a trip to a gun shop or show this weekend...

Tommy, you may remember that Browning model 1971 .380 pistol I had.  Nice little gun, but it was stolen about five years ago. Never shot it much, but it was accurate and nifty as heck.
I gave away four boxes of .380 JHP ammo to a guy at work a couple months ago, did not realize it was so ridiculously hard to find until after the burst of generosity wore off.
I have about 30 boxes of 9x19 ammo and five Glock magazines. I was thinking that the 9mm would become my "standard". Agree that a nice revolver in .38 would be good, too. Our BIL had a decent short barrel .357 S&W revolver, he wanted me to buy, but I thought it was too bulky, inaccurate, and expensive, although it's a beautifully crafted gun. He's a lot more profit motivated than you. ;-)

So, I am thinking $300 or so (if I went much higher, I'd likely get another Glock) and a simple, reliable 9 mm pistol. I'd like to get SS on Ni plate, it may be outside in the car all the time.
I have seen that Ruger LCP (very neat), some say that its popularity is a major reason .380 ammo is so hard to find.

I know you don't care much for the Glocks, but I bought my G19 about two years ago from a friend who sold it to me for what it cost him way back when ($250 IIRC) , he had moved up to a .40 because of "stopping power".
I have been impressed with it from a pure funcionality view, and it is a small, light package for 15 rounds of decent power.

Ruger Blackhawk with the optional 9mm cylinder?
By swapping cylinders you can shoot all kinds of ammo, 9mm, .38 spl, and .357 magnum, what ever you find available and/or cheap!  :)

Smith & Wesson M&P9.

The thing fits my hand like a glove and recoil w/standard loads is almost negligible.
Easy to strip/clean, lightweight and good looking.
Cost? Heckuva lot less than a Glock.

Just my 2 cents.

I know it's not as small as most of the pistols that have been mentioned and is a little more expensive but it will fit under your seat and it provides a devastating blow at close range. The Taurus Judge. It shoots .45 Colt or .410 shotgun shells. Shotgun shells are still reasonably priced and available around here. Let us know what you decide on.

What do you folks think of this CZ pistol?

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=134377209

I like the looks and price of the  Keltec P-11, but FTF with a "limp" wrist (like a hurried shot) is just not too cool, period. My Glock won't fail under those circumstances.

Maybe a Glock 26 to take advantage of the six magazines I have for the G19...

The Kahr looks interesting.

Maybe I can hold off with just the one pistol...

The CZ's are nice.  I would spend the extra and go for the RAMI, polymer frame, .40SW and I would be careful buying a used pistola.  You do have a birthday coming up, don't you?

OK, I'm finally ready to buy! And would have tonight if there had not been a thunderstorm at rush hour.

My decision is for a sub-compact 9mm pistol, and for the Kel-Tec PF-9. This is a single stack pistol with a short barrel and a small frame.
Remember, I have a Glock 19. The concept for me is a concealable pistol for a commonly available round with decent power.

Tommy tells me to get the Ruger LCP, but .380 ammo is still hard to find and expensive. I have a decent supply of 9mm and can buy more at Walmart inexpensively.

Anyone ever shot this pistol? I see a lot of differing opinions, it seems that the later production guns are OK, but I kinda figure it will never be a pleasure shooting range gun.

I have a 380 (pistol), - pick your manufacturer, might be worth a thought. Personally though, I prefer a revolver, and have "a few". Most folks seem to think they need a hand-held cannon, - they're wrong.

Jerry, I own a Kahr cw9 and love it. It has never jammed or stove piped on me ever. I did the standard 200 round break in with no problems. Small and compact, its my pocket rocket when I go out. :)

Google Kahr cw9 and read the reviews.

Jerrycup,

Are you an NRA member? They have a really good article comparing nine (9) concealed carry 380s in the February 2010 issue of American Rifleman. A quick review would tend to indicate the brand-spanking new 380 Taurus will fit your bill regarding function and price: it even made the cover.

Jerry,

On second thought if your anywhere near Iowa I could make it possible for you to put your hands on a few different models: price independent and price dependent.

if your looking for sub compact and need high capacity magazines and inexpensive
kel-tec p-11
not your range gun but will get the job done
and it takes smith and wesson 59 magazines 15,17,20,30 round magazines
i put 500 rounds through mine to get the feel and not one malfunction
i paid 225 out the door with a 20 round magazine looks stupid hanging out the bottom but its 20 rounds

My carry pistols are Sig 239 (9), PPKs (380) and LCP (380). All have been flawless. I would highly recommend the Sig. The .380's are only carried when I am in dress clothes that makes the Sig hard to conceal.

Thanks, I appreciate the comments. The Kahr CW-9 looks like a good option at about $400, and I will look at one. The Kel-Tec PF-9 (Parkerized) is only $300. That's my leading contender, and there is a local dealer with one on hand. Seems that all these pocketable guns are still in short supply. I will report later.

Got the PF-9 this afternoon. $299 with Parkerized slide. This one local shop (in Mesquite) was the only place I could find with one in stock. A dealer near my work had a used blued one for $349.
Did try to look at the Kahr CW-9, but they are difficult to find, even online. Looks like a good choice. This new one is likely to be kept in my vehicle. Thanks for all the advice. I'll post back when I take it to the range....
