: triry January 13, 2010, 03:50:25 PM
kinda toying with a trip to the valley,................it would be a combined rim-fire/airgun outing.
i'd like to give my son ryan an opportunity to do some 100 yard jackrabbits with the .22 bolt gun we just built.............anyone interested ?

lol...besides, ive been looking for an older marlin 60, 725, 925 or 10/22 to hot-rod. anyone have one gathering dust ?

Go to McCain Valley near Boulevard......pavement turns to dirt as you enter(McCain Valley Road)...it is BLM land legal for hunting...take first right onto Sacotone Spring road...go about 1 1/2 miles...there are turnouts for parking...Jacks are there...

Got this Jack east of Plaster City...would have to guide you in there...

: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: Wingman115 January 21, 2010, 06:31:08 AM
I was out there camping last week and saw a large amount of yote and rabbit activity.  I saw one rabbit but he was to quick for a safe shot. There were a ton of squirrels out there but spooked really easy. I had to go for 70 to 100 yard shots with the .22 rimfire. All in all we had a great time.
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: crazyhorse January 21, 2010, 06:46:48 AM
Were you down around the campground area...?? usually,I hunt off Sacatone Spring RD..more jacks...less squirrels...
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: triry January 21, 2010, 07:10:22 AM
grins...so 70-100 yard rimfire shots. ryan ( if i can sneak him outa school ) will love this !!

: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: Wingman115 January 24, 2010, 01:12:26 AM
Dress warm on Thursday hi in the low 50's. should be fun.....Last  time I was out there it was about the same temp and the squirrels were everywhere on rocks trying to warm up! I heated a few up with hot lead. LOL
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: crazyhorse January 24, 2010, 04:02:44 AM
Wind would be big factor...need to monitor that....but not likely though,as there is another low pressure system coming in Monday...with rain thru Wed...and snow in mountains....

It is 38 F in Boulevard right now...(9 AM PST)....high for Thursday forecasted at 54 F and sunny in Boulevard/McCain Valley...

Having grown up I Maine I'm ready. Let's roll.
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: triry January 24, 2010, 07:45:31 AM
so.................is this an airgun venue ? or are we bringing powder burners ?
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: Wingman115 January 24, 2010, 08:16:48 AM
I'm thinking powder burners with it being cold out my CO2 guns won't be to effective.
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: autoduel January 25, 2010, 06:12:04 AM
I'm torn between bringing my .22 mag or cranking the marauder up to 30 ft-lbs.
On one hand the 22 mag shoots flat. It's sighted for 50, but drops only 2" at 100 if I remember.  But I haven't shot it in 4 years and can't verify the zero.
I can tune the marauder all I want at home, but not sure about 70+ yard shots in wind.  And if I crank it, I gotta find some kodiaks.
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: crazyhorse January 25, 2010, 06:48:08 AM
Think I may take my Dominator HPA .22 and my Stevens/Springfield .22 rimfire....I've hunted squirrels out there before(last year) All required long shots beyond 70 yards..most were closer to 100 yards...

With the brush,etc..you must ambush the Jack rabbits if using air rifles.....otherwise only a shotgun works on Jacks if you walk around...
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: crazyhorse January 27, 2010, 06:57:30 AM
OK...I'm still in...who all is going for sure..?? And is meet up location OK..?? It is within one block of the Lake Jennings Road off ramp from I-8 east...
Burger King ...
14134 Olde Highway 80, El Cajon, CA 92021
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: Wingman115 January 27, 2010, 07:01:56 AM
I'm in for sure 6am Burger King.
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: crazyhorse January 27, 2010, 07:09:23 AM
See ya there..rimfires for sure..
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: Wingman115 January 27, 2010, 07:20:08 AM
Ya I'm bringing the rimfire will be to cold for the CO2.
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: autoduel January 27, 2010, 08:07:56 AM
I'll be there with the rimfire and a 2240 sidearm.  Is a .223 too much gun for jacks asssuming it's legal to hunt with assault rifles if I only use a 5 rnd mag?
The marauder is out, since I haven't taken out the regulator to retune it for max fpe.  Besides ranging beyond 50 yds with my scope is iffy.
Is there quail out there too?  season's almost over.
Looks like I gotta be on the road by 4:30 am.........
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: triry January 27, 2010, 08:59:26 AM

: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: crazyhorse January 27, 2010, 02:46:18 PM
Best leave the .223 home...Rimfire needed though and airgun of your choice..I'll have my  rangefinder and i'll show you a trick for 100 yard drop(poi)

My cell for in the morning: 619-599-6240..coffee/food at burger king if needed..
See ya in the morning..

Sounds like fun guys - how did it go?  I've never been hunting before but maybe I'll look into a 22 rimfire and you guys can show me the ropes some time.
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: Wingman115 January 29, 2010, 04:09:00 AM
It was cold but we were spotting squirrels average range 75-100+ yards out. Rich spotted a cottontail but that was it for rabbits. Were going back out again when the weather warms a bit.
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???
: crazyhorse January 29, 2010, 05:20:59 AM
Casey...I have a rimfire I can let you use..scoped..Savage Model 4C...bolt action..

Thanks for the info and pictures Rich.  Not to hijack an airgun forum but what steps would I need to take to be 'legal' to go out and shoot there?  I imagine some kind of class and/or registration?  Any recommendations on a gun?  I would have to think there must be a ton of good condition used .22 LR's out there.
: Re: desert jack rabbits ???

Santee has a class once a month. 15 dollar fee. Goggle san diego hunter safety it will come up.

casey, surprisingly .22 rifles are scarce used here in san diego,...............ive had my best luck on gunbroker.com. curently looking for a marlin bolt gun in .22 to tinker with myself............

I know of a guy who sells used .22 cal rifles who lives in El Cajon...I bought a Savage model 4C from him...he has several different ones...he shoots on Thursdays out at Southbay Gun Club (mornings) in Delzura...

A friend also bought a .22 rimfire from him...
