: Similar pellets, big differences

Hello All, I've been shooting the Benjamin Discovery .22cal 14.3 gr pellets in my gas rammed Webley Patriot only because that's all I had on hand. I gave away 2500 of the box 14.3 gr CP's in a raffle we had last year because at the time I no longer owned a .22. When I aquired this UK Patriot from forum member fatback late last year I had to buy something to shoot in it so I picked up one tin of the Discovery pellets  at Bass Pro Shop.Since it's a magnum class .22, I figured I wouldn't need such a large supply of pellets on hand since this would primarily be a hunting gun. Anyhoo, since Im down to less than 100 remaining Discovery pellets I picked up some CP Ultra Magnum 14.3 gr pellets to try. Since both of these different pellets are actually made by Crossman and weigh the same I first wanted to see If there would be much difference in POI on paper. There was. I'm 1 1/2" low and slightly right with the CP Ultra Magnum pellets compared to my zero with the Discovery pellets. The Premier's grouped OK but I did have a flyer in a 10 shot group. No flyers with the Discovery pellets. The Discovery pellets fit the breech tight. You have to push them in. I use a wood match for a pellet seater. With the Premier's, no extra help needed. Fit loose. Some looser than others.  Today after returning from my unsuccessful Turkey hunt, I shot both pellets over the chrony to see what velocity differences might be. The Discovery pellets shoot 915-930 fps. The Premier Ultra Magnum pellets went from 775-900fps with most in the 880 range.Big spread. Two very similar but very different performing pellets in my gun. Moral of the story: Don't assume anything when it comes to pellets. So similar yet so different. For now I I'll stick with the Discovery 14.3gr pellets for this rifle since I have absolutely no complaints with the accuracy or performance down range with this pellet.Happy hunting and shooting to all. Dave.

I have seen similar with same weight pellets, your absoulutely right "don't assume anything when it comes to pellets"! btw I have have good succes with discovery pellets in the past, even washed, weight them and then pledged em.. a really good pellet for the price and a screw top tin hehe:)

I agree Tony. They are a good value. Like you I wash and pledge Crossman pellets but my digital scale has gone beserk so no weighing 'till I replace it.As good as the accuracy is though I feel I'm not compromising a thing by not weight sorting these Discovery pellets. Those Premier Ultra Magnum 14.3gr pellets however gave me over 100 fps velocity swings and probably could benefit from weight sorting.
