: Scoping my options
: cmdrstp May 07, 2010, 02:32:06 PM
Hello, all. How are you? I am from Upstate New york. I recently bought a Gamo Big Cat 1200 and a GRT-III trigger (love it!). I was offered this forum by CharlieDaTuna. After, browsing, I sense this is a friendly and very informative site. I am sure I will be asking some dumb questions.

Well, I like the Big Cat except for the horrible trigger and scope that came with it. I guess I got spoiled with Leupold but, there is no way I'm spending that much on scope for this particular air rifle. I am sure this has been asked a thousand times but, what is a reasonably priced (< $100) scope? I am looking for a variable power (3-9), Mil-Dot with fine reticules, adjustable turrets, and that will leave no doubt about handling a springer recoil. I fear that the illuminated ones would be too thick especially with an increase in the setting. I could be wrong. I have heard some good things about Leapers. What would you buy in that price range? Also, a good mount (1 piece; low to mid height)? I hate not being able to put my hands on something before buying online.

Oh, one more thing. When I was taking off the stock, I wasn't paying attention and noticed two plastic washers (1 short, 1 tall) or roll-washers on the floor. Are these intended for the one extended pin on the cocking lever?

Thank you for your advice. Take care.

Stephen

Welcome to the forum Stephen! ( Not too far from you here) Can't really help you with the scope but the guys here are great and you will get some good suggestions. Are you a hunter or a paper puncher?

Thank you, dk1677. I do both.

I apologize for posting my question here rather than the scope/mount gate.

Welcome aboard Stephen, and there is no such thing as a dumb question on the GTA. We all had to start somewhere..:) As far as a scope recommendation, that is entirely up to you and what your eyes see..:) But if you are asking about what scopes are springer rated, try looking at Straightshooters web site under scopes. They list them as light, medium and heavy recoil by vendor. They have done all the leg work and I have not bought one from them that has failed yet. Of course you can look around the net and sometimes find the scope you want at abetter price. But Straightshooters are a good solid place to purchase air guns and accessories.

WELCOME TO G.T.A. CMDRSTP!! leaper scope's seem to be a big hit here & leaper mount's to, I used one on my whisper for a 30mm scope I had laying around & it is working fine,my son is useing a leaper scope 3to9 mil dot & he like's it & the little I've used it Ido to & his mount's are leaper also. the roll -washer's you asked about sure do sound as the one's on cocking arm, they roll down inside forarm rail area (whisper only one on right side) they do fall off easy,do a check for them, kinda important to keep arm smooth on cocking.and there doesn't seem to be a dum question on here or they would of kicked me off a long time ago. I'm sure other's will chime in on scope's there is alot out there in that price range(springer's eat them like popcorn)WELCOME AGAIN TO THE BEGINNING OF AN ADDICTION!!!!

Thank you all very much for the nice welcome and advice. I really appreciate that.

Gene and Jay, the 2 roll washers placement was correct to be on the cocking arm.

Again, Thank you.

Leapers has several in that range that are good scopes. I have 2 from them and both are very good scopes. I also have a centerpoint 4-16x40 ao that is working good sofar. Shot sat night using the I'll ret. And the first shot changed the intensity a little but no other changes after that. I like the 4-16 mag. I could actually fit a 50 on there  and knowing that now I would have went with the leapers 6-24 x 50 ao. But the center point is good for now. All the scopes I have were in the 50-70 range.

I personally have three leapers scopes and they all work flawlessly.  Their accushot mounts are very nice as well.  Just make sure that you get the right height for your new scope to fit correctly

I take the pricing back on the centerpoints... at a local walmart they have 3 models  ranging from 54 to 64 dollars... I think the 64 dollar one was either 3-12 or 4-16 I didnt look at it up close and had AOP and illuminated retical....

I grew up in Upstate New York. I recommend the Bushnell Banner 4-12x40AO scope. I have used one (the same one) on several air rifles and haven't had any problem with it yet. It is currently on my Diana 48 and performing perfectly.
