: Scope installation?
: cmdrstp May 14, 2010, 03:06:43 AM
What  are your tips to correctly align the reticules with the bore axis?

Despite slowly tightening the ring screws in an even, figure-eight pattern, I get some shift.

Also, is it proper to degrease the dovetail of all oil prior to installing the scope mount? Not that my air rifle will see adverse weather or poor storage  but, I worry about corrosion that may form between the mount contacts and dovetail. Do I have OCD?

Thank you.

Stephen, Do you have OCD?? Maybe but that's not important. It's good advice to degrease all mounting surfaces when mounting up. Clean the dovetails judiciously and don't worry about corrosion forming here.It may be impossible to get perfectly aligned reticles with the bore axis so just get as close as you can and don't worry about it.If your gun will accomodate it, a pair of bubble levels can aid you on keeping the scope level while you tighten things down. One level goes on the gun and one level goes on the elevation turret. True them both up and you should be pretty close. It may take a couple of tries before you are satisfied but don't let that discourage you. If when tightend down the scope is no longer level with the gun then start over by just loosening the ring screws just a little and turn the scope tube until the bubble returns to center and retighten,Patience.

LOL. Thank you, Progun. It's a spring-piston (Gamo Big Cat 1200).

Thank you, Jay. I will do. I even count the number of turns of all the screws in a figure eight pattern.

dang bro maybe there is alittle OCD creeping in,got any med's on hand?LOL ,just know I'm kidding with ya ,if you need more help just shout & remember ring's only need around 12 or 14 in. pound's  on them don't get real heavy handed or you can screw up inner's of scope.I like a tool called a fat's wrench(screwdriver type torque wrench for gun's)

LOL. I told you.

That's another thing. Just how snug do you screw down on scope rings? I know it's a feel thing when you don't have a torque screwdriver.  I usually do snug as I fear stripping, or worse, damaging the scope. Should "snug" suffice with the recoil and vibration of a spring-piston? How much torque should you use if one does have a torque screwdriver?

Thanks.

yeah, just snug them in to where they feel tight(I just use fat's because I have plumber's hand'sLOL)then place a strip of tape front & back & you will see any movement of scope.A torque is nice thing some day to get for your self, kinda nice even puting stock's back on gun's(same pressure each time make's them more acc.)

Good ideas. I will check with tape. Thank you. Any recommendations on a specific torque  screwdriver?

LOL. I am definitely picking one up! I can be heavy-handed when it comes to torquing down on a screw. I know what you mean. I could have NASA install it and it still would look off to me!

Thank you, Jay.
