: Natural progerssion?
: redroush00 June 09, 2010, 04:57:04 AM
I'm itching to get a .22 rimfire especially for hunting. Does this progression normally go in this direction with you guys or do you start with rimfires and go to air guns?

In my case, I started with airguns, graduated to rimfire-centerfire and then migrated back to AGs.

Happy Shooting!!!!

Annie and I went to a gun show over the weekend Now she want a 22 rim fire. She just started shooting with me last year.
The way she's going I figure by this time next year she'll be looking at a Berret 50cal. LOL

I started with 22 powder burners for hunting in the 50's but had BB guns for hunting pigeons in the barns. So I guess I started with powder and went to air. I never realized what fun and precision these air guns could produce. This has been a learning experience for this old man. Am I having fun :D

The usual - BB guns as a kid, then pellet gun, then 22 RF, then centerfire and shotgun. Got back into pellet guns for some "critter control" and haven't been able to spit the hook out yet !   :D

I guess you could say it's sorta progression ... to regression - I feel like I'm on a second childhood !!!!:D  :D

Well the natural progression to modern , efficient, accurate airguns for me evolved from shooting powder burners. Sure as a youngster I had a Daisy BB gun. When I got old enough to hunt I used shotguns exclusively. That progressed to centerfire rifles and rimfire 22's.Because I always have been a fairly high volume shooter the cost of ammo  began to become a consideration. Even inexpensive .22 rimfire ammo costs add up when you shoot a lot so the natural progression to airguns was the answer. Sure the cost of some of our airguns exceeds the cost of the purchase price of some .22 rimfires but the ammo cost for pellets is generally lower than rimfire fodder.. I shoot my air rifles waay more than my rimfires these days but I still from time to time drag out the ol' .22 rimfire for the fun it provides. Of course not everbody can just plink away in their back yard with a .22 rimfire so the airgun is definitly more neighbor friendly.By all means satisfy your urge to get a good .22 rimfire rifle.

Things sound awefully familiar.  I started with a Red Ryder, the Crossman 760 as a kid.  Not too accurate and I didn't know about precision airguns.  I graduated to .22LR, then centerfires.  An Army enlistment was next followed by more .22LR then varmint guns and AR/AK rifles.  A couple years ago my buddy and I wanted to get airguns because we didn't have many places to shoot 22-250, .223 & .22LR that was close.  He has a large backyard with a grass hill behind his fence and we wanted to be able to shoot anytime there.  We bought moderately priced .22 springers and have since shot 10,000+? rounds in the past 2 years.  This spring I picked up a Hammerli 850 that I converted to HPA and did a bunch of tinkering/mods on and now WadeS wants a Marauder.  We shoot air rifles mainly now.  I can't remember the last time I shot a powder burner.  Lots of the feedlots/farms we shoot at the powder burners would scare the livestock and cause a problem so air rifles are great solutions.

I suppose I was like most kids...started with a Red Ryder BB gun at about 8 Years old...progressed to .22 rimfire rifles and hunted with shotgun.. under my Father's supervision, of course. I was fortunate in that we were able to go out and shoot alot as I was growing up. As I grew older, I went into more powerful centerfire rifles. Now that all my hunting territory has dried up, I've "graduated" back to airguns. Talk about an addiction! In the last 2 years, I've gone from no airrifles to a dozen...And yeah, it's all because I found this site and fell in with some of the most helpful, friendly and knowledgable folks I know. Thanks to them I'm able to shoot more.

I got my first gun on my 10th birthday; a Savage 22 rimfire.  My parents wouldn't let me have a bb gun; afraid I'd --- never mind, you know the rest of the line.  Next was shotguns, then handguns, and back to rimfire ( magnum ).  I didn't have my first air rifle until I turned 61; late bloomer I guess.  I'm up to 6 airguns now, and counting; Trying to make up for my depraved childhood I guess. :p

My first rifle was a lever action bb rifle when I was 6 or 8 years old....had to share it with my brother (We were dirt poor back then). We took turns shooting wine corks out of it...plug the cork into the muzzle. I remember that it only needed one crank of the lever to shoot and there was a hole to drop in the bb`s.

Then sometime in high school I got myself a single pump bb pistol, and an elder friend of the family gave us a .22CO2 Crosman 357 (It was all steel not like the semi plastic ones today).Near the end of high school I got myself a break barrel multishot .177 Gamo Expotec....still have it. Then I had a 20 something year break from airguns while I got a .22lr rifle, 2 high caliber ones and then got back into airguns...my first was just 2 years ago....and loving it.

Rim fire to air for me.Because air is cheaper and less of a hassle. For me shooting is shooting unless my target requires a bigger round.

Started with a Daisy BB at 13 years of age shot it like crazy loved it, then progressed to an adult German made Gecado spring piston etc etc then yes went on to rimfire for years, then as I matured it intrigued me that air rifles develop their own power source like a swiss watch which led me on to recoiless spring piston ten meter target rifles, now they really are something to behold, just think there are so many moving parts but on the shot they are dead still that's WOW factor, never used it for targets but have killed a few bunny's at very close range just can't miss with these things but getting back to progression I always take my HW 80 out and haven't shot my .22 rimfire for years.
