: riddle me this: RS2 shooting way low in .177
: darryl June 10, 2010, 08:27:18 AM
I think I scored a winner here, but it's a diamond in the rough. I bought the Beeman RS2 from Wally for $59.99, and the .177 barrel shoots about eight inches low. I swapped in the .22 and it shoots just fine. I had shimmed the scope's rear mount, but to no avail on the .177 barrel. Anyone got any tips for me? I'd like to bring the .177 into good shooting order. Crown it? Check it for true? I'll do those things, but what else might cause it to shoot so low the scope can't help it. Of course the open sites produce acceptable results.
thanks!

Hey Darryl WELCOME TO THE G.T.A.!!!!! I'm glad you got a good one.Mine is shooting great so far with open sight's at 10 & 20 yd's,but I have not but on .177 barrell yet?(I have other's in .177 I shoot)But it sound's like you have a handel on it,factory gun's can alway's use a little TLC when new.But it sound's like your .177 barrell's got a little droop in it,even if not you can tweak it a little too raise p.o.i.,just don't go heavy handed & take your time(a little goes a long way). The scope on these are like all factory one's ,they too leave a lot of room in improvement department,a good mount & scope will make a world of diff. for you also,I most likely will not mount up till I get a better set up.KEEP all screw's(stock an scope)tight an enjoy your new addiction!!!P.S. don't know where in cinci. your at but give a shout sometime an we will get together an shoot,I'm as you can see in franklin.Trying to find a club for us all in S.W. ohio here.

So does the .177 barrel shoot accurate, just low? If so it could be a couple of things. The breech face angle may not have been machined correctly and the brech block does not rotate up enough against the end of the compression tube when you close it. Or the barrel was pressed into the breech block off angle(but the breech face is fine), causing the droop. Try laying a long straight edge (like a yard stick etc) across the top of the rifle, starting on end a few inches in  on the reciever near the breechand then hanging out over the barrel. If you can (might need some help or three hands to hold everything lol) try to measure how much droop there is on the different barrels and compare it. You may need to bend the .177 barrel up to bring more into line w/ the .22. I would avoid shimming the scope. Plus you don't want to have to remove the shims when using the .22 and re-install them for the .177.  Ideally you would want them very close, so that it would take minor scope adjustments when switching between barrels, not a complete sight in.

Fixes for the RS2:
-recrown the barrels
-loctite the scope mounts. I have had zero problems since doing this.
-loctite the barrel/stock screws
-shoot the *_*_*_*_*_* out of it

You STOLE it!!

Wally World  has Crosman Premier Hollow Points in both .177 and NOW .22s!! They shoot well in this gun.

After doing the above mods I have very little scope adjustment between the barrels.

thanks for all the replies, guys. I checked and the .177 barrel is definitely bent downward. I rolled it in place on my kitchen counter top while trying to slide a store receipt under it. Bad luck. the receipt slid under the barrel at roughly the center. I looked at that point and saw daylight. The good news is I contacted S/R Industries and a new one will be sent out to me by the end of the week. But I was told by customer service that each barrel is custom-fitted to each breech. In fact S/R wanted me to send the bent barrel back to them, but I opted for them to send me a new one. That way I have a box to send back the old one (if I choose). Meanwhile, I'm waiting for my CenterPoint 4x16x40mm mil-dot scope and my Leapers one piece mount to arrive. :D

PS I'm glad the site is back up!!!

put it in a padded vice and use a cheater pipe to bend it the right way. dont have to send it out and problem solved thats why i dont buy from wallyworld or the chinese beemans from anywhere cause they are junk without work. with the money you spend on that piece of crap to get it shooting well you could have got a panther or a decentley tuned chinese gun from mike m

hey (it's not)Tom,
I haven't spent more than the purchase price on the rifle so far, not counting a new scope and scope mount. But I get your point. If it's too good to be true it probably ain't. I think if I can swing another air rifle purchase (from the wife) I'll take a few steps up in quality. I recall older Beemans being ready right from the box. No dickin around to make them shoot better. They shot well, then better as they broke in. But my Beeman-budget days are behind me for now. Do this thing will do me nicely. A little sweat-equity, and I'm hopeful the rough gem will polish out nicely.

hhmmmmm... true. true. I'll look into a B26. Is it nice right out of the box? I was originally interested in an (inexpensive) .22 air rifle that will do 800fps right out of the box (no fake marketing numbers, but true chrono-tested). I guess I'll ask in the general forum.

Got my RS2 almost 3 years now for Pyramid air which I tuned myself with info I got from searching and help tips from fellow airgunners here and there and last year I got a MM QB26 .22. The QB26 is a single holer and smooth but the RS2 is butter smooth and have a tad more power and shoots where I aim it consistently and more quite than the QB. It could be I did right on my tuning and got her "G" spot.

He's right. I spent 50 cents on a bolt to re-crown the barrels. I'm now broke.

Gun shoots great now.

Guess I learned my lesson...

Interest rates are quite low now. I'd refinance that loan for that bolt! :D Did I mentin that while that .177 barrel shot (so low that Satan was skipping about to avoid the pellets) fairly accurately when I tried it with the open sights? If S/R manages to send me a straight barrel that shoots decently, I will keep the RS2. If I run into issues, I'll take it back and consider something a bit more elegant, but still not too expensive. After all, Bentong seems to be enjoying his RS2. Is it made in Germany? I've seen some with muzzle brakes, and assume those are German made models (none at Wallyworld, unfortunately.

Got the RS2 from Pyramid Air about 3 years ago and from what I've done with it,...has been a pleasure to shoot since. I don't easily give up until I get my shooters to shoot small groupings...Thanks to this forum and fixes from forum members I have learned a lot. I'm only shooting the .22 for it's a lot smoother with that caliber. Trigger is crisp real 2 stage better than my QB26.

hi BBW,
Is your RS2 a Chinese-made Beeman model 1073 like mine? The reason I ask is because I've been making the really bad mistake of referring to the rifle as an RS2. I don't think I found that name anywhere on the box. Only the "1073". Also is your rifle modded in anyway? Sorry I don't recall if it is or not.

: Re: riddle me this: RS2 shooting way low in .177
: bigbadwulff June 16, 2010, 12:04:08 PM
Mine is the 1073 sold at Wal-Mart. It's also called the RS2 like it says on top of the action. It also goes by 1000 something or other. Made in China, yes. Not modded other than crowned barrels. I did replace the breach seal with a thicker o-ring. That can get you a few fps.
: Re: riddle me this: RS2 shooting way low in .177
: darryl June 16, 2010, 12:38:58 PM
I didn't look on the action, but I did do some more looking about. Is it fair to say that the RS2 with the muzzle brake is made in Europe? two links: http://www.airgunwarehouseinc.com/py-1288.html      http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Beeman_RS2_Dual-Caliber_Air_Rifle_Combo/1307
It's confusing, except that I know my 1073 is made in China. It says so on the box! :)
darryl
btw, does your RS2 say made in China on the box?

: Re: riddle me this: RS2 shooting way low in .177
: jay morgan June 16, 2010, 05:14:26 PM
darryl it is a RS2/1073, one in the same, the muzzel brake's you see on other's is a mod guy's do to help with harmonic's of barrel & a place to grab when cocking & a slight noise dampner & the list goes on & on for the use of them.An then you can get into air shredder(think that spelling) an all kind's of brake's,But it's just a mod air nut's do to get more out of the gun's,Heck ask an most likely you will find 10 on here for sale or a list of 50 people who will make ya one.I'm sure when I scope my RS2/1073( chicom) I will place one on it.The name's an nick name's of air gun's can drive ya nut's,I thought powder name's was bad till this air addiction started an I'm still scratching my head 99% of the time
: Re: riddle me this: RS2 shooting way low in .177
: bigbadwulff June 16, 2010, 05:22:56 PM
I think the actual RS2 comes with the brake and a carry case. The 1073 does not. Same gun except for that.
: Re: riddle me this: RS2 shooting way low in .177
: darryl June 16, 2010, 06:05:39 PM
Hi Jay (homey, Cincinnati here), Bentog, and BBW,
In the links I included, where the RS2 has a muzzle brake, that is not a mod. I'm suspecting (because I thought I read it somewhere) that the rifles that come with cases are made in Europe. My rifle says RS2 on the action, but I think when Beeman sold out to S/S Industries some rifle manufacturing must have been transfered to China. Nothing wrong with that, but I believe it was a step down for economic reasons. The ones sold at Wallyworld are not the same one sold at Pyramid Air. I guess I can call and check that out with them. Ahab cannot let the whale go!

Meanwhile my 1073 is producting one-hole-ers with the .22 barrel and open sights (that's ten shots, a little larger than a quarter). My scope still has not arrived yet. Tracking shows it was handed off the the USPS, so it's probably in Bumfuk, Egytp  by now. I'll let you guys know when the new .177 barrel arrives, and how it shoots when it gets here, though it is not supposed to ship out until today, or tomorrow.

hello self,
I just thought you should share with everyone here that your CP 4x16x40mm mil-dot arrived today, five days earlier than you were made to expect it. Then you took some sage advice and bought some Blue Loctite #242, and got to screwing stuff down. Of course you cleaned all the threads and the rail first (Q-tips are my friend). Now the clock is running, and you'll be able to start shooting as of 5:15pm EST. Oh, you even remembered to line up the cross hairs while tightening everything down. Yeah, you got the eye relief too. Careful now. It's hard enough to get a hat on that thing as it is. What could go wrong? :)

Hi I've had the 2 barrel beeaman's rifles what you do is to get one of the barrels to shoot where you want it , then put the 2nd barrel on the gun now just correct the error by bending the barrel so both barrels hit in the same place that way you can just change barrels and not have to re adjust the sights for them to hit in the same place ,Howie
: Re: riddle me this: RS2 shooting way low in .177
: darryl June 17, 2010, 03:37:53 PM
what say Jay,
I've been trying to stay busy and pass the time doing ***cough-cough*** chores. Never too late to cut the grass or clean the kitchen while the wife is a the beautician's.  I'm committed to letting 24 hours pass before I shoot that big unit. But I might go down and look at it a bit. I won't disturb it. I just hope I haven't dicked anything up to where I need a crow bar to make adjustments. Don't jinx me,man! You know the odd thing? It's sort of hard to find a shooting club around here. I think Xavier University has an Olympic Shooting team. I'l look into that. Otherwise it's set up a target in my garage, and shoot in from out back. That's good for about 30 yards. Gotta mind the neighbors, but at least I'll be shooting sway from homes with young children (the older ones are fair game! j/k! I like kids- but it's hard to get them fresh! j/k again!!!)
Interesting that I spent more on the scope than I did for the rifle. One day maybe I'' be able to afford a better rifle one day.
Where do you guys shoot? Hmmm...an interesting idea for a new thread.
Anyway I have the will to resist sighting in that scope until things are good and irretrievably tight. It's been a good day! go LAKERS!!
darryl
PS did I mention that I tried to straighten the barrel using the corner of my kitchen counter top? I read about that technique somewhere. Those barrels are supposed to be made of soft steel. Guess the old guns ain't what they used to be. :o

hey Howie,
thanks for the tip. I really need to get a vise before I try to bend the.177 barrel. Meanwhile S/R Industries (Chinese Beeman) is sending me a new .177 barrel, supposed to have gone out today or tomorrow.
You should see how low that barrel was shooting. I tried with two scopes to get the POA to match the POI but there was no catching it. I ran out of adjustment on both even after shimming the rear mounts. I finally pulled out my mouth harp and played some deep-down-don't-nobody-love-me Blues (well in another life I might have played a mouth harp as a bluesman). So I'll wait to see what happens. I told S/R that I'd send the old barrel back. wish me luck.
BTW Howie, nice collection of guns in your sig.

Well I could not wait the whole 24 hours. So it was a matter of blind trust when I picked up my model 1073 with the CenterPoint 4x16x16 mil-dot scope and prepared to be Zen-ified. Well I zeroed the windage and elevation adjustments, the loaded in a Crosman Premier Hunting Magnum, ad fired. SUNNUVA***** it's shooting 7 inches low! I run out of elevation adjustment  while vainly trying to get the POA and the POI to merge. Good thing it's the blue Loctite #242. Now back to the shimming thing. Maybe I should check to see of the .22 barrel has a bend to it? Or has that Accupoint high mount bit me in the @ss?

OK back to my Man-Cave ( the basement laundry room).

Holy Way-back Machine, Batman! BeeBeeDubya,I think your age is showing! I know mine is! :D
An update on that scope. I shimmed it, then re-centered the adjustments, and let fly. Better. I'm sure I can get the POA to catch the POI now without running out of adjustment. The rifle shoots very well in.22. It's a ragged one-hole shooter from my indoor nine yard range. Good thing the Centerpoint focuses down to five yards. I'm having fun, but I may join an airgun club for giggles and grins, and long range shooting. What's a model 1073 for for distance-wise? Anyone know?

Darryl,
Honestly it doesnt matter much what you pay for a rifle they will ALL do great from a good tune...... I picked up one of the rs2's from wally world the 59 bucks too... trust me it may take alittle fiddeling around but you will get it to shoot just fine :)

another good buy from wally world is one of the phantoms they have in .177 my boy picked one up and its a monster for a 80 buck rifle just ask Jay morgan (who happens to be MY dad...) lol I am living a bit north up in Xenia....

Hell let us know we can figure out a place to meet up and do some shooting( we used to shoot in the old mans/my back yards as we where neighbors but I dont know how the new neighbor would like that much LOL.... Would tell you all to come up here but I have not setup a shooting lane yet and need to figure out a backstop

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the offer to go shooting. That sounds like  a trip I would not mind making one day. Maybe we can work something out. :)
As far as fiddling with the RS2, I'm not really set up for doing that as I don't have a work bench. I do have a kitchen counter that ought to be big enough, so maybe I can construct a spring compressor, and do a light tune. The rifle shoots well enough, but could be a bit smoother. It seems to require a tight hold for best accuracy. Mine seems to like the Crosman Premium Domed Magnum hunting pellet. Very accurate, and hard-hitting. The Gamo flat-nosed matched pellets don't do as well in my unit. I want to try Gamo's Predator look-alike poly mags in.22 some time. I have this idea it would make a great little "tank-buster" of a pellet in the RS2.

I'll have to check up on that Phantom. Does Wally have it in .22? I'll check online. Since I sold my R1s some years ago the wife has looked down on the cheap-O Chinese rifles I bought later (B4-2, and B3-1). They are crude, but fun to shoot, if down on power. When I bagged the Beeman she seemed to approve, and even held her tongue when I told her i had a bent barrel. What's in a name?  :D

Darryl,
I dont have the equipment to turn out custom spring guides(no lathe) but if you drag it up here I have a workshop setup, I can do a complete basic tune for you similiar to what I did to my dads Whisper here in this thread
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=28003&posts=13&start=1

we can pull her apart and see if the seal needs replaced if its in good shape we can just fix her up with the stock internals and then when/if the spring goes or the seal goes it will just be a matter of swapping them out....

lol the b3's have quiet a following here on this forum they can be tuned into fun little shooters themselves LOL

Nice to see you guys having so much fun together. I can't nail a date down right now. The wife is actually recovering here from surgery earlier this month. So I'm "Hubby-Do". It's her third surgery since February (we actually spent our 35th anniversary at the hospital). She'll be fine, just needs time to mend. But I gotta say, you guys got me thinking about that neck of the woods. I wonder how many more SW Ohio guys are on these forums? Jay, good luck with your idea.

Hope your wife is doing better!!! 3 surgeries in the past couple months does not sound fun at all!!!

Thanks for the offer, Mike. Much appreciated. I hope to keep in contact with you and your dad so that one day we can hook up.
No, the wife isn't having a lot of fun, but she is very strong, and very fortunate too. She'd been diagnosed with  breast cancer, but seems to have an excellent prognosis for the future. At least she didn't have to have Chemo or radiation treatments. How good is that? Something about a low oncotype number meant she could pass on chemo and radiation:) Still, surgery is surgery, and she's been operated on enough.
Lucky for her I'm quite the cook.!   :D

Hi all,
I posted a new thread  in this forum titled "riddle solved". I discuss the arrival and testing of my new .177 barrel from S/R Industries. Needless to say, though I say it all the time; I'd rather be lucky than good.
