: Hollow point or domed pellet
: Zzyzx June 20, 2010, 04:00:09 PM
The Crosman Marauder in .177 Calibre i recently picked up from a seller on this forum is a nice shooting rifle. It likes the 10.5 grain pellets. I have two choices here. The Crosman domed heavy and the Benjamin hollow point of the same weight.

In hitting birds, gophers and such will I find any real difference in killing quickly with the hollow points compred to the domed pellet. Both seem as accurate.

The domed pellets are a bit less than the hollow points. Not enough to worry about and if the hollow point pellet really gives me more killing energy when hitting the target I will go with them

Anyone know what the real deal is between shooting the two at live targets? Will I get quicker kills with the Benjamin Hollow Points?

Yes Joshua I know what the real deal is between these two pellets when shooting at live targets. Better sit down for this one. The answer is : NONE. That little dimple on that pellet that is often referred to as a "hollow point" is kinda' cute but is in no way more effective on live targets than the standard dome. The only thing that matters with either of these pellets when shooting at live targets is whether or not you put the pellet in the kill zone. If you do with either pellet the result will be the same. The dirty little secret is that hollow point pellet is just for looks. Now this is just my opinion and others may differ but no one can prove that the CPHP is any more effective than the CP dome at the business end.Shoot whichever is most accurate in your guns.

I agree with progun. Hollow Points in power burner are much deeper. Power burners have way more energy the will mushroom the bullet and make a real difference in damage. Where a solid bullet would go through the game with less damage. That doesn’t you can’t get a good kill it with a solid bullet. Like the pellets hitting the kill zone is the most important thing. IMO
I like crossman permier ultra magnums.

and as hard as crosman pellets are, there is no chance for a mushroom

Did someone steal the 'd' from your keyboard :)

Both pellets should work well 10.5gr is good:) I have not noticed any difference between dome and hollow points in Ag's. I spend my time testing various pellets for the  best accurcy that way I have better chance of placement sometimes HP and sometimes Dome. BTW  I have not experinced any short length pellets or pointed pellets that are accurate enough for me! Better to hit than miss:)

The Crosman pellets are pretty hard so the Hollow Point and their regular Dome pellets don't really expand.  I've shot them into telephone books at 10 meter distances, and sometimes when I dig them out...they look the same...just the skirt could be bend.

The RWS Super H-Point might expand abit more since their pellets seem to be abit softer.  But their pellet head have more of an angle and not really a dome so it might not fly as straight.

I agree completely with Progun and others- after recovering pellets from targets, ground squirrels and rabbits, there was no appreciable difference in damage and no extra mushrooming of the hollow points. I had a rifle that liked the HPs a lot better for accuracy, and that was the reason I used them. They were both killers so I went with whatever the rifle liked.

I would agree with you all... on most of your statements about hollow points Vs. domed pellets. BUT

I can not believe no one has mentioned the (1) hollowpoint that DOES expand, and do exactly what it is designed to do.

The Predator Polymag!!! The Best hunting pellet ever made!!

Don't believe me? buy a tin and try them out!  They deliver maximum energy to the target. The one word I can use to describe them is

DEVASTATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my independent test have shown they expand almost 40%, and do not lose their skirt like most pellets. just a nice mushroom

the subject was on the crosman pellets which do not expand. polymags are a totally different animal

lol...oops, But you should still try some. ;)

I tried the polymags but they aren't nearly as accurate at the Crosman pellets.

The hollowpoints I am working with are the Benjamin Discovery .177 Cal, 10.5 Grains, Hollowpoint.

Are they softer than the Crosman pellets? Both are 10.5 grain and shoot with the same accuracy in this rifle. If they do expand a bit I will stick with them. If not, why go with some that cost a bit more?

I have Polymag in both 22 and 177 and they are not accurate in any on my guns. Wish they were as I think they would make a good squirrel round.

It's best to stick with the most accurate pellet that your rifle is ranged at,...be it with the irons or glass. If you want to go with a Magnum /HP style pellet, the tried and true Cro-mags are about the best thing around,....IMHO. Although their accuracy falls off at around 30-40 yards,...which is totally subject to the rifle they are shot from,...they will and do expand to provide a wider wound channel. But looking at the "big picture", a pellet regardless of type or style, hitting a head-shot on a squirrel, bird, or any other small game, that has retainned 7 fpe and up from what ever distance is still going to get the job done. Personally, I try to get as close as possible to ensure a quick, clean kill. Only time I 'reach out' with a shot is when I know I have a clear and unhindered shot. HTH.  tjk

My experience with cphp in .22 has been that they will expand.  I am a little surprised to hear/read these comments.  I don't actually hunt anything but just for kicks i have done some testing on soft lumber and found that that little dimple is all it takes to cause some mushrooming.  Granted it is not as extreme as a bullet but it does increase the diameter of the pellet.  When compared to air arms or jsb exacts the cphp's do not penetrate as deeply as the dome pellets do either.  So if you are shooting something in the skull or a larger varmint then the cphp could have a better energy transfer even though on paper the math would disagree. In my wfh the jsb's have the better energy over the cphp however with a strong gun and a  skull,  rib or spine hit to cause the mushrooming that tougher material the cphps are made of is not an issue and you will avoid over penetration that the domes can cause.  I can't be the only one to have had cphp's actually expand??!    As well, pred's work really well in the falcon hunter but they don't really mushroom so much as flatten almost making the shape of a very small broad head blade.

lumberis totally different than soft tissue. the origianal post was about the effect on game

I wouldn't question your experience, but you're shooting a WFH at lumber. This is the extreme case in springerville, the highest MV against a solid object. Even then it would be interesting to really compare recoveredCrosman domes to HPs with a caliper, and compile the actual differences.

Most of the guns I shoot with are 100 fps or more less than WFH velocities, and they are going through thin-skinned furry game with relatively thin skulls and bones. I did the bulk of my ground squirrel killing with Beeman SS1000 (.177) and Baikal MP513M (.22). Neither is exactly wimpy.

I recovered some from the critters and some from the sand behind them, where additional damage would occur to the pellet. The pellets didn't show any appreciable difference and the squirrels couldn't tell. To be fair, I did not meaure with calipers, either. I did shoot a lot of ground squirrels with those two rifles in particular. The "Beeman" shot very well with CPHPs.

Someone shoot a couple into duct seal an recover them an we should have a answer on this?I'd think the seal would have as much resistance as critter's would? An all pellet's that I've recovered from wood where flattened out, heck some even just broke apart into fragment's.Maybe even use a med. thick cloth over seal for skin/fur?

Funny you should ask....

I just shot some test pellets into some duct seal yesterday to document my HW30S's preformance.  Since I have no access to a Crony, I devised a plan to use the duct seal and some pellets archived in tiny zip lock bags, to use as reference for future peace of mind.

5 shots of each pellet, into fresh duct seal areas, 30' indoor,  the numbers are average of the 5 and only symetrically deformed pellets were measured.
Each measured with a digital caliper.

Gamo Match Wadcutters      .215
RWS Hobby Wadcutters      .208
JSB Exact 8.4gr Domed        .197
Crosman Premier Hollow pt   .184

For the lower velocity of my HW30S,  the flat nosed wadcutters definately would open a larger wound track.
YMMV (Your Milage May Vary) with a more powerful airgun,  However, your Magnum's velocity may be may be closer to mine if you are shooting longer distances.

Hope this is helpful for my first post here.
Thank-You all for the wonderful education in air guns I have been getting from reading this and other forums.
