This is a follow-up to the "riddle-me-this" thread wherein I discuss my new Beeman Model 1073 (RS2) which came with a downward bend in the .177 barrel. To say it shot low is an understatement. As some of you may have read, I contacted S/R Industries, and talked with Dani, the customer service person. I chose the option of having her send me a new barrel, even though she said it would not fit " as each barrel is custom-fitted to each breech". Old reckless me took a shot anyway. The Rifle was sent out last Thursday or Friday, and arrived today (this is what Brown did for me).
I hope the attached cam-photo tells the story. These are the very first shots from the new barrel. The three touching shots in the lower left quadrant were all the same aim point. The other four are me dickin around, trying to use mil-dot aiming No adjustment of the scope. I just mounted the rifle barrel, checked the fit and starting shooting.Oops! I forgot to clean it!! Not to shabby, eh? :emoticon:

Yeah, ya gotta love it when a plan comes through. (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif)

Looks good, what's the diameter of the circle and distance from shooter? I'm guessing about 1-1/4" circle. What's the target material?
Sorry, just curiosity. LOL

Happy Shooting!!!!

Hi Jay,
I'm really happy with my turn of good fortune with the new barrel. I can't imagine what this rifle would be like with a tune. I'll surely have to take you and Mike up on that one day (sooner rather than later, I hope). I was really surprised that the POIs were so close between the two barrels. Good old Beeman HPs.

Thanks for the sentiment and understanding. The wife and I do well together, supporting one another through some interesting times. On the DL, I had a double hip replacement in the past six months. Thank goodness for health insurance! Damned deductibles! LOL!!! Fascinating how those bills keep turning up!
Thanks for the prayers too. They seem to work better on the wife than they do on me. Life ain't fair!

thanks chortdraw,
I might replace the breech seal on day. I saw some "trimming" coming off with the .22 barrel in place. I just pulled it away, inspected the seal and kept on shooting.

s'up ezman,
The target is a pressure-sensitive label, a sticker. I still have a few from working in a label shop in the '80s. As it sits in the picture, it's 1"x1&3/8" (good guess, though). The distance is a bit over 24ft, indoors. The rifle was resting on a folded towel draped over the backrest of a chair. I was real comfy. :) I'm hoping to set up a longer range outside, shooting from my back yard into my garages. I'll wait for a cooling spell first. It's been too hot and humid here, and it brings out the skeeters.

that's OK itsnotom,
You have better rifles than the model 1073 anyway. Why take a step back? For me it's a step forward from what I own now (B4-2, XS 3-1). But thanks for being glad for me, anyway. That means something to me.

i wasnt downgrading you and im sorry if you took it that way. im just speaking from experience with your gun. i never got itfrom wally but PA. i sent back the gun 3 different times and  everytime i sent it back, they sent a new one and it was always screwed up. i got tired of that BS and told them to stick the gun somewhere and give me my money back. again, im sorry if you took it the wrong way

itsnotom,
Man we are missing one another here. I take no offense to what you say about the RS2 (I call it model 1073, per the box it came in), and I didn't think you were downgrading me at all. I'm sorry my writing style caused you to think I took offense. You really do have better guns. At least that B40 of yours is a better rifle than the RS2, imho. If I could afford one I'd have one for sure.  Well, I guess that means I assumed you had  more than one rifle, and that each was better than the 1073. I'm shopping the bargain basement for now, and not too often at that. So I'm good with the 1073  for now. Oh, and I was not being sarcastic when I said I thought you were glad for me. I meant it straight up.
But, if you don't mind, I did have a little smile when you wrote that you would not have one. I know your experience with it, and can't blame you. I could go on, but other people reading this might think it's a love-fest or something equally yucky. We are cool, man. No sweat. No strain ( in a manly-man sort of way).8)

PS I hope you can tell by my signature that I like a little humor here and there.

Excellent job and welcome to the addicting world of airgunning. (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif)

And great that both barrels are so close without tweaking the scope. You got yourself a winner!!!!

Happy Shooting!!!!

no prob and i do have more than one. i sold all 8 last xmas and about a month later i started buying again. this hobby is sure addictive. now i have the b40,rws 34p,crosman nightstalker, benji AS392 and just picked up a b26-2 for 100 shipped. so the numbers are climbing again. lol. and i would have no prob with owning an rs2 if it was a good shooter but the past experience left a very bad taste in my mouth about them. keep your eye on the yellow classifides and something better will come your way.

Addictive? You said it. I can't believe I spend as much time as I do reading up on air rifles, and making out a wish (I-had-the-money) list. Good things come to those who wait. I did buy a Crosman C02 pistol from Crosman's online custom shop. It's a model 2300 in .22 caliber with a 14" barrel. It shoots OK, but I missed a hard-hitting springer rifle. BTW, I'm starting a Not-For-Profit organisation with the mission to collect fine air rifles from people who wish to fight their addiction to those air rifles (by giving them to me). I'm doing what I can to help those so afflicted. It's a sacrifice I gladly make. If I can help just one person... :)

Shoots like mine. Sorry others have had other results and more so continue to remind us of such continually.

Totally understand the heat and skeeters comments. LOL

With the daytime temp hitting 100, I try to shoot early in the morning of just before dark. And the skeeters, they tote off small children around here.

Back to the target picture. Sorry, it still has me puzzled. What is the sticker attached to? Photo kinda appears to be a piece of tile but could be woodgrain too. It looks strange cause there's holes in the sticker but no pass-through or embedded rounds behind it. May be just my eyes...LOL.

: RE: riddle solved
: darryl June 22, 2010, 03:17:27 AM
EZ,
You won't believe it but that sticker is just attached to a piece of 8x11 white paper from my printer (works well- just place sticker on paper, place paper on thick wooden back stop). The problem comes in that I was using the camera on my little Motorola cell phone. I had to take the paper off and hold it up against
a door just to get the camera to see it in adequate light. Apparently the camera sees things a little different from you or I. How it saw a green background is beyond me. It's white paper, like I said. I don't have a digital camera. I do have a Canon FT SLR datnig back to 1969, as well as a Yashica 635 box/portrait camera from the same era.  :) Sorry for the confusion.

Guess what? My scope loosened up. My POI started creeping, and I suspected the scope right away. I cleaned all parts in alcohol before applying Loctite #242, and let it sit for 12 hours, but in the end I found a ring screw that seemed too easy to turn. :0 It is now with a spirit of adventure that I start over with mounting the scope. May the ghost of Shotgun Gibbs guide my hands.

Darryl, thanks for the explanation of the photo. Sorry, I'm just a curious old guy. LOL

And good deal on hopefully finding the creeping shot issue.Cleaning and applying loctite should take care of the problem. Let us know.

: RE: riddle solved
: darryl June 22, 2010, 05:20:40 AM
OK. Here we go! (Didn't the Joker say that in Dark Knight?) Anyway, I've removed the rear shimming to perform a pure comparative barrel test to determine if the barrel fit(s) actually did produce the same POI when I switched from one to the other. I've attached an image of my results.Very impressive. But as you can see, there is a bit of a problem. I'm using the Accushot high-mount unit with the CenterPoint 4x16x40mm scope. I'm open to suggestions. What's the science behind making the proper adjustment? Expert replies only (implying that anyone who hits targets at 10 meters or further out is an Expert).:D
darryl
Note: the .22 grouping is on the left-hand side of the hole, the .177 is on the right side. I think you can see where they are separate. I put five shots through each barrel for this test. The .22 pellet was the Crosman Magnum Domed hunting pellet. The .177 pellet was the Beeman coated hollow-point. I think this relatively tight grouping from barrel to barrel was too much to hope for, but there it is. Again, using my cell phone camera. The right side looks a bit squared off because I tried to make the paper lay flat, and that took some of the "roundness" out of the .177 holes. The low shot on the left in the image is a .22 shot that sort of got away from me due to a too-relaxed hold. The 1073/RS2 seems to like a tight hold.
update edit: I'm back to shimming. That's the best possible way out of this without buying height-adjustable mounts
: shimmed the scope, shot some more...
: darryl June 22, 2010, 04:16:21 PM
Hi guys,
Well, no picture to post, but I've done my duty: re-centered the scope adjustments; shimmed the rear mount; shot some groups in .22; made some more scope adjustments (this time moving POA about 1/2 inch up,and about the same  with left windage. The Beeman model 1073 is a good shooter. Just needs me to put a thousand rounds through it (and one day a tune?). The rifle has some kick, and prefers a firm hold (did I say that already?). My next rifle will be an RWS 54 in .22. I figure about a ton of aluminum cans ought to about get it done. Ya think? BTW I haven't swapped barrels to test the .177 barrel since the latest shim job. Tomorrow, maybe. If I'm not too tired from the honey-do wars.
