While I'm waiting for it to warm up outside to shoot paper I thought I'd share this with you.
I know alot air gunners love to shoot Doves. There fast and very quick on the wing.Very hard to hit even with a 12 guage shotgun.( It does not bother me if you do )
But I got this guy 9 years ago when he fell out of his flimsy nest in an apple tree in my front yard.I put him back hoping he would stay there so his mother would care for him.But the next day he was on the ground again. sh!t what am I going to do? he was no bigger than a small toad, little beady eyes and a wide flat beak. And I know the cats would get him sooner or later.Well into a shoe box he goes,a trip to a local pet store and some instructions how to feed him with a eye dropper.never in my wildest dreams I thought he would live!!!
Well,9 years later here he is and like a dog comes when you call him, takes a shower with me too!.He's gotten outside a couple of times and always returned.Hum ,needless to say I can't shoot his family anymore.
Sincerly
BBGun Bob

I understand how you feel Bob,
Doves are a beautiful creature, and a few nesting pairs are a lovely sight.
And I could never understand how bird that build such a poor nest can become so prolific. It's good that they taste so good, or we would be buried waist deep in them.
I didn't know that they lived so long ?
Good luck with your pet Dove !!!

very stanage indeed. I had always heard that the life span of a wild dove was around 24 to 36 months. Shooting them in the fall hunting season was saving them from a cold hungry winter and probably death.

I like that story.............Thanks

Yup sometimes those critter's turn into pet's hehe and there's nothing wrong with letting one get away or saving the life of a little one, Ma Nature like's that. :) It's the hunter that know's that it's all about give and take and what go's around come's around and it look's like you got a feathered buddy. Thank's for sharing, Ed

I loved that post. I also didn't know that a dove could live that long. I"ve always read that their mortality rate is around 90% within the first year.
Nice story and nice pics..
