: HW 50S - Out of the Box
: Gene_SC January 25, 2008, 09:41:45 AM

Back in November I bought one of what I thinkwas the last HW 50s sold by Pyramyd Air. I think it is a Weihrauch distributed by Beeman. PeakChick would know the history and hope she might give all of us a lesson here...:)

Well I was not impressed by the way it shot at first but the overall exterior build was of very high quality. I only have two or three other air rifles of this quality out of my 30 or so springers...:) So I set it aside and waited for a drooper mount part number 260 that I ordered from BKL. They are approximately $55.00 but are bullet proof mounts. It took a couple weeks or so to get it because they did not have any more in production at that time. I waited and got side tracked with my TF-89..:)When lookin over the HW50s at first everything was high end from the front sight with globe to rear site with excellent adjustment features. The deep blueing, the nice metal trigger and triggerguardand finely finished wood stock with a very nice chocolate brown rubber butt pad that blends very well into the stock. Weihrauch has done an excellent job on Quality Control with the HW50s.

Yesterday I finally had enough daylight left to mount the BKL mount and one of my Simmons ProAir 6-18X40 AO Truplex Scopes on her. FYI that model is no longer available. I set up my first target at 20 yards to get it scoped. Well I just took a few clicks down and maybe 8 clicks to the left and she was shooting dead on. I moved the target back to 30 yards and started shooting for the spot I had made... Approx.2" with black magic marker. I also must mention that when I first bought the HW 50s and fired it, that it was very twangy and buzzed. My first shot yesterday was the same and it went off like a .22 powder burner....:) and that took by surprise. Well after about 60 to 80 pellets later she smoothed out some and I was getting very comfortable shooting her. The trigger was a bit on the hard side but worked ok. I adjusted the trigger down to about 3 lbs of pull and off I went..:) I ended up pushing another 50 or so pellets through her...hehe.

I took a liking to this German Winch real quick...:) With less than 200 pellets through her I am really exceptionally pleased with the over all look, feel, metal blueing, wood and the accuracy of the HW 50s out of the box. I know that I have to pull the stock and look and see what if any lube the factory used and then will probably tear her down and see what she is packing under that shiny coat..:)

I know now that she is a keeper and will fit well in my harem of ladies.....:) If anyone has any questions just ask.

Good review Gene.  I picked up one of these ladies last year and was also very impressed with the accuracy of mine out of the box.  No dieseling or twang, just an nice thunk and she clocks at 820 fps (ave).  What impressed me most was that it is just as accurate as my R7 and I don't find it hold sensitive although others seem to.  Accuracy with a bit more punch is a good thing in my book.   The trigger on mine came adjusted super light and I would not want it any lighter.  Like you, I plan on keeping this one for a looong time!  She likes cpls and Beeman Trophy's but is not all that pellet sensitive among the pellets I have tried.  Surprisingly, at least to me, is that the accuracy with el-chepo Gamo Hunters rivals the cpls (after zeroing, of course).  I toped mine with a Tasco 2.5-10x42 with an Accushot mount and liked the scope so much, I ordered one for my RWS 24 (my true love).   I bet you will have a long time love affair with your honey too.

Thanks Jim, Yes she is a sweety. I had the twang and buzz enitially but most went away. Not hold sensetive as I can see. She shoulders well and very comfortable to shoot from sitting position. I will not start looking for a good pellet until I do a tune and after a 1000 shots with el cheapo pellets I will find the one she likes best.

Just curious Gene, did you clean the barrel good before shooting the first time?  I now do that to all my "new" guns.  The only one that has dieseled after cleaning was a Quest and I have had problems with that gun.  May be a bad seal.

Cheers,

Tex

I never mention it anymore but I should. Yes I do clean and inspect the barrel along with checking hardware for tightness. I originally cleaned it the day I recieved it. Run patches through the barrel till they came out white. Sometimes I forget to mention the obviouse and thanks for reminding me of that...:)

Purdy lookin' piece there Gene, almost broke down and bought one myself just for the looks alone, but decided the $300 + was really more than I wanted to spend...so I bought an RWS 94 instead for $165...hoping that w/a little TLC I can make it look and shoot almost as nice as the HW 50.

I have been waiting for this review since you bought this German Lady, and it slipped under my radar, until now.

Great review buddy !!! The HW-50S has had my attention for some time, but I never liked the stock until now.

Looks like another winner Gene ! best of luck with her...

Unfortunatly Sky, the HW 50s has dried up in most all the air gun retailers. I do not know if Beeman stopped importing them for Weihrauch to the US or what. I was able to buy the last one from Pyramyd Air. I do not remember if they even made one in a .22.

Good luck

Weihrauch does make the HW50s in .22. As I recall it shoots mid 500s in .22. Beeman has made an agreement with 3 different vendors to import more Weihrauch, non-Beeman labled rifles this year, and hopefully the supply will be better. Pyramid, Straight Shooters and one other that escapes my memory will be carrying the Weihrauchs.

The HW 50 does have some barrel droop. It has been a more popular seller in Europe and was even imported here with a diopter sight option, hence the barrel droop. Using a BKL 260 D7 drooper mount on mine gave me lots of usable evelvation adjustment and the scope is fairly neutural in it's range.

Thanx for the heads up .Yes, I also read that on the Straight Shooters sight they will be selling the HW50s. Hopefully the rifles will be in shortly. Need something a little something between my R7&9. Looks like that the 50s will fit nicely, was even thinking bout selling my R1 as its a little too much gun around here, but you know ill hold on to her. What kinda optics do you recommend? as in magnification?

I really like the Bushnell Banners, 4-12 x 40 AO. I have three of them nd have not had any issues with them. They have good optics, are moderate in size and weight. The Banner was a good fit on my HW50s. Optics Planet has a great price them, the Trophys too, if you want to invest a little more.

Looks like a good fit you got there with that scope. I just noticed by looking at your 50,that the stock on it is quite low on the comb. do you have any cheek weld issues with the drop on that stock?  :emoticon:  :emoticon:
: RE: HW 50S - Out of the Box
: PeakChick February 18, 2008, 08:01:11 AM
The HW50 does have a Bavarian style comb on the stock, so it is a bit lower than a Monte Carlo rise. I don't have any cheek weld, sighting plane issues. The ergonomics on this rifle are near perfect for me. The only rifle I have that fits me better is my BSA Lightning XL.

I have no prolems either..:) I have a very large head and cheek and eye placement seems to be within tolerance of a clear plane with scope... hehehe.. Gene

(LOL) I guess itll be fine for me too I guess. Thanx to both of you Peak & Gene I just put my self on the waiting list @Straight Shooters for a 50s in.22. Hope it wont be too long of a wait.BTW are your 50s stock?

Mine has some Macarri tar on the spring, is otherwise stock.
: Re: HW 50S - Out of the Box
: Gene_SC February 18, 2008, 11:41:41 AM
Sky, I think you will be very happy with it. It is a very nice shooter and the tar does take away any annoying spring noise that it may have. Even if thespring twangs a bit, it still shoots accurate as your shot placement from your end can be..:) I wonder if Peak has a big head with odd eye placement... LOL Gene
