Quieting my springers??? Gamo and RWS---shrink wrap??
« on: September 11, 2008, 12:24:02 PM »

Hey y'all,

Thought I woudl ask the experts on this one---I've read about shrink wrapping the spring in a springer to reduce the twang/recoil sound. How is this accomplished??---do I need to make/buy a spring compressor and tear the whoe thing apart? I've never actually seen pictures of how people do this---any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Do you mean the shrink wrap like that is used in shipping stuff on pallets? Or do you mean shrink tube, which would be put on a spring guide/tophat to tighten up the clearance between the ID of a spring? Anyway...if you would like to open up your springer(s) then you must have a spring compressor. Some guns are easier than others to tear into. And usually getting to the spring is a little easier than taking the piston out to get at the seal and compression chamber. I have done somemyself...it can be very rewarding to make your springer quieter/more powerful/more consistent/smoother .... to each his own. Sure is a good sense of accomplishment when there is success.

Shrink wrap/shrink tube---"220/221--whatever it takes"---hehe--thanks for giving me the correct term---I just knew it was shrink something---sounds a bit complicated for me--don't have a compressor--maybe I'll make one---is there some type of schematic to follow so that I can put it all back together again??--thanks a ton

There are numerous designs on the net for spring compressors. Some of the designs have been referenced on this forum, and there's even a design in the library of this forum. If you go into the library you'll see it once you look around. If you use the search function on this forum, I'm sure you'll find a whole lot of different types.

Bret, I would not recommend using the shrink tube, it is a temporary fix, at best. When it starts to come off in pieces and it will, it makes a nasty mess inside the gun. I see that you also posted in the Gamo Gate, so I'll assume your working on a Gamo. The best thing to do is make, or have made a custom fitted guide and top hat. If that's not an option, the next best thing for a Gamo, IMO is to use a Crosman spring and top hat. The Crosman spring fits the rear guide pretty good and will take out most of the twang. Since the quality of the spring is not as high as the aftermarket springs, I would get 2 springs, 1 top hat and seal. Should be about $20 shipped, for all of it.

I think it was Fix who gave me the best idea for those with mills. Will work on any gun and it isn't something else to step over. Fix if you read this and I am correct why not post your video again for those who missed it.
