Removing blueing
« on: October 21, 2008, 08:18:50 PM »
Hi ...Has anyone removed the blueing and polished
the steel on there gun?
How do they stand up to rust/marking etc
and is there any thing that can be use to
coat it with to protect it from rust?
Is there a easy way to remove the blue?

Wire wool to remove bluing. Then polish up with various grades of wet'n'dry, and finish with a polishing wheel. It has to be kept polished though, as it will rust. Best to keep it wiped with an oily cloth.

Hey Peter, Splash one of the GTA members has done this with a B-3 and it came out really nice. Maybe he will chime in with some info for you. I do know that that B-3 shoots as nice as it looks..:) Pretty dang good.

Peter, I tried Perma Blue&Rust remover, didn't work too well. If it's a cheaper gun, you can do what I did, I used a Random Orbit sander with 220gt paper. That took the blue off in short order and polished it up pretty good too. Be sure to wear gloves, or you'll have to do it again, to remove the rust finger prints. To protect the metal I just sprayed it down with Boe-Shield T-9, great stuff, now after a handling I just spray a little on a rag and wipe it down.

It does remove bluing very quickly. Usually I have the opposite problem (getting the blue back on) but this sure worked on old military finishes.

I have done quit a few regular firearms sanding is the best way. I wouldnt start with anything rougher than 220 grit. I start with 320 if it has a gloss finish already. I would avoid using a file. I have also used a mild Muratic acid it work very well but you have to counter the acid with a hot alkilye bath (Draino) or the acid will stay active even after a rinse. It will also leave  a frosty finish so you still have to polish. I wash & dry the gun in the dish washer or just hot soapy water. Wipe dry & use a hair dryer. You need to start blueing as soon as the gun is clean & dry it will rust. Dont touch the gun with your bare hands. Use rubber gloves & wash & dry them first they come with mold release on them. What ever blue you use follow the directions. Most say to rub in one direction only. If you try to scrub it in you will wind up with blotches. When you have it all done soak it down good with oil.l
