Longest squirrel shot...
« on: December 07, 2008, 03:07:13 AM »
47 yards with my Discovery 22 PCP...squirrel was on top of a fence post and I hit him near his shoulder...he fell limp to the ground...and never wiggled or did the "brake dance of death"...the JSB 14.3 gr went right thru him...you can barely see the exit wound...

I decided to hit him near the shoulder as he was laying flat with his head down..so went for centermass,so to speak..up till this shot i have been taking squirrels with head shots...but now I'm thinking the lung/heart area is better...??

Great shot Richard, and I am sure you could of taken him down at 60 yards just as quick. The PCP's do the job and are much easier to shoot at long distances. Just think what a JSB Preditor would do at that range..:) The Crosman Discovery has shown that it is a completive accurate PCP for sure. Thanks for sharing with us and hope to see more of you hunting experiences.
THE ONES I SLEEP WITH: BSA Lightning XL, AA TX-200, AA ProSport, BSA Ultra, HW-97K, Crosman NPSS .177, FX Cyclone, HW-30 Nicle Plated, AA-S200, Crosman Marauder, CZ-634, R-9 DG, Webley/Scott UK Tomahawk, Benji Kantana, Benji Marauder, Benji Discovery.....

Awesome shot Richard!  The longest for me is only about 45yds.

Yeah lung/heart area works very well, but if you miss some of the vitals in the rib cage area it will take some time for them to die or they may run and hide.  Hitting the shoulder is good because it disables them from getting away fast, plus 99% of the time they get hit in the shoulder bone, it means the pellet went through the rib cage and fatally wounded the squirrel.
Springers:
Diana 36 .177
Diana 350 .22 (donated by Timmy!)
Diana 350 .177
PCP\'s:
Air Force Condor .22 (Airhog)
Air Force Condor .25 (Talon Tunes)
Air Force Condor .25 (Lemak)
CO2/Pump:
RWS Hammerli 850 .22
Crosman 2240 Custom .22
A few Crosman pumpers .177

Good point re shot placement...in this pic you can see entry wound...the shot was uphill about 20 degrres (angle) so the pellet entered low and came out higher on exit side...quite frankly I was suprised I hit him where I aimed...LOL...

I have not tried the JSB Predators yet...I have tried hollowpoints, but learned from my experience with my 850 .177 they are accurate at shorter ranges under 30 yards....

I may get a tin of Predators and try them to compare groups shot from my Discovery using the JSB domes..I'm thinking they won't be as accurate at longer ranges.....dunno... what I do know is the JSB domes have a softer skirt and the skirt diameter fits tighter than other pellets I've tried which I believe contributes to their accuracy...I stumbled onto this shooting my Beeman R9 22 springer......I began using a Beeman Pell Seat and noticed improved accuracy after using the "ball" end on the pellet skirts for a tighter fit in the breech...

Straight Shooters has some neat tables giving skirt diameters of same caliber  pellets....may be a good topic here...??

Thanks...at this point im my air rifle experience,I had the confidence to try that shot.....my first air rifle was the Umarex 850 CO2 .177 and I learned a great deal about temerature/poi variances....that led me to the online ballistic calculators....and the adiction esculated from there...lol...

My 2nd air rifle was the Beeman R9 DG .22 springer...wow...had to learn how to shoot all over again...that was a real learning experience...I hold it like you would a sparrow in your hands....very gently........fun rabbit gun...

But the Disco is my favorite all around rifle...mainly for the longer effective range it gives me..
