Anyone interested in some Cyclone numbers?
« on: December 11, 2008, 01:37:14 PM »
Most people seem to get these in .22 these days, so finding info on the .177 can be tough, so I thought I'd put this out there for anyone interested.

Got my FX Cyclone .177 in early September, but hadn't done any shooting at the 2 lower power levels.  Well, it's getting too cold to shoot outside, so I finally set up my indoor range in my shop.  I can manage 10 yards in there, and it's warm, a big plus.  Never did care for shooting when I can't feel my fingers :-)!  Finally decided to pull the chrony out and see what this thing can do on medium and low.  Since this thing has shown a marked preference for CPH's from day one, I decided to stay with those for these tests.  Plus, that keeps the testing more consistent, the only variable is power level.

Started all strings from a full fill, 200 bar or 2900 psi.  As stated, all shooting was indoors at 10 yards, chrony about 1 foot from the muzzle, with a halogen work light aimed down on the chrony with a shield over the diffusers.  Same pellet for all strings, the 10.5 gr. Crosman Premier Heavy.  String length is 30 shots.  I'm not going to bore you all with long strings of numbers, just the main data.

On high power, high 969.7, low 929, avg. 953.9, ES 40.7 and SD of 8.87.  21.22 fpe avg.  Shot this last Sept.
Medium power, high 843.6, low 828.5, avg. 833.7, ES 15.1 and SD of 3.39.  16.21 fpe avg.  Sweet string, the graph is almost flat.
Low power, high 699.5, low 682.5, avg. 690.2, ES 17 and SD of 4.05.  11.11 fpe avg.

The accuracy of this rifle is remarkable.  Granted, I was only shooting at 10 yards, and I shoot from a bench with the forearm on a really nice Caldwell rest.  But it's worth noting that the low and medium power strings each went into a hole that measured .35" across.  That's a 30 shot group of .17" c-t-c!  The combination of weight, balance, and fantastic trigger make for a rifle that's very easy to shoot well.  Expensive, yes, but this one can do it all, from match level power and accuracy to a very effective small game field gun.  Hope someone finds the info interesting and useful.  Later.

Dave

Dave thanks for the info . There are always people interested and needing good info so they can make intelligent decisions on there purchases . I went through this recently with a .177 Condor and there was no info out there for me to look at and it made the purchase much more painful than pleaserful .But I persisted through it all and the rifle far exceeds my expectations to say the least . That is a reason I list as much info on it as I can in hopes that it will help others that are thinking of buying as well .Keep up the good work and continue to share your findings with fellow air gunners .Marvin

HI Dave

Did you have any vertical shift in POI at the 10 yard distance? I was surprised with the amount of vertical adjustment with my AA at about 30 yards. What is the difference in noise level between low and high power? I don't think I have done any shooting in a couple of months with too many walls to build and shrubs and trees to plant. Oh I almost forgot the mulching and decorations.

Thanks daved....that shooting string info really helps.  My next purchase would probably be a FX Cyclone or Whisper.....just have to wait for the Canadian currency to get at par or close to it with the Greenback.

Hi, John,

I assume you mean vertical shift vs. my sight in distance?  I currently have it zeroed at 45 yards on high power, scope at 10x mag.  At 10 it's shooting 1/2" low on either low or medium power with the scope at 5x,  scope is a Bushnell Legend 5-15x40.  I should probably try it at 10x just to see if I get a mag induced shift.  No windage shift, which tells me I got the scope on straight this time :-).  Haven't tried shooting at high in the shop yet, maybe this weekend.  I didn't notice much difference in noise level, but I wasn't really thinking about it, either.  I'll pay more attention at my next shooting session and let you know.

I can sympathize with the too many projects, this is some of the first serious shooting since my Texas trip.  Gotta run, later.

I'm sure you'd be really happy with either one.  I've heard that the Whisper really is that quiet, just remember it doesn't have adjustable power.  Other than that, they're very similar as far as I know.  Glad the info was helpful, later.

......better send it to Texas so I can dispose of it properly for you!

That is a joke guys, everything Dave says about that Cyclone is true.  I got to shoot it a bit when Dave came out and stayed with me a couple months ago, it is truly an amazing little gun....just needs a wood stock:)

BTW: I forgot Dave, do Kodiaks cycle well in that gun?  The Kodiaks didn't cycle well at all in my Black Widow, but they shot real good.  I had to really force the bolt closed on the BW with Kodiaks, but it loved CP's.

Yeah, and I've heard that the S200 is a POS, too ;-)!  So when are you going to put a decent stock on it?  I don't know if I want a wood stock on the Cyclone, the synthetic helps make it a perfect field gun.  A wood stock can only add weight and make me twitchy about scratching it.  Besides, I've got a pretty wood stock on my S400, maybe not as nice as yours, but I like it :-).

Ya know, this thing shoots so well with the CPH's that I don't think I've even tried Kodiaks.  I have some on hand, I promise the next time I shoot it, I'll give them a try and let you know the results.  Haven't tried EJ's in the Cyclone either, although the S400 loves them.  Looks like I have a whole winter of indoor, low power shooting, guess I'll have to try some other pellets.

Winter finally arrived today, started snowing about 10:30 this morning and hasn't stopped yet. Supposed to get heavy tonight, guess I'll be putting the snow blower on the Deere tomorrow.  Company Christmas party tonight, gotta get ready.  Later.

I really cannot add much to what Dave has already posted but I can agree with numbers and quality of the FX Cyclone. Dano, as far as a wood stock on the FX, I have to totally agree with Dave again on it being a fantastic field rifle. You just do not have to worry about walking through thickets and brush with it. But it is of a high quality material which nothing compared to many other synthetic stocks you see these days.  The FX Cyclone is a very well made Swedish PCP in my opinion..:) I sure love mine.
THE ONES I SLEEP WITH: BSA Lightning XL, AA TX-200, AA ProSport, BSA Ultra, HW-97K, Crosman NPSS .177, FX Cyclone, HW-30 Nicle Plated, AA-S200, Crosman Marauder, CZ-634, R-9 DG, Webley/Scott UK Tomahawk, Benji Kantana, Benji Marauder, Benji Discovery.....

Well as Dave knows I'm a "sit and shoot" sort of guy, so I really don't worry much about banging up a wood stock.  That little Cyclone is truly a lightweight gun with the synthetic stock on it, it would be great to carry in the field, and the soft rubber grip things feel real good too.  As far as synthetic stocks go the Cyclone has a good one, I probably wouldn't kick it out of bed:)  I really like the Biathalon cocking system on those guns.  I've never shot an Air Arms side lever gun, but I doubt there could be any improvement over the FX system, it's sweet.  I doubt I'll be in the market for a new airgun this year, but if I am I think anything from the FX line will be high on the list.  Nice shooters for sure.
