Death of a Raven

I was working in my back yard yesterday and my wife hollers out the door.  RAVEN on telephone post!  I looked up and sure enough a raven at 43 yards on the telephone post.  I went inside the house and grabed my tuned D54, cocked it and added a pedator pellet.  Ran behind my block wall and slowly creeped up resting my rifle on said wall.  Put the crosshairs of my 3x9 on its head and let loose. Dropped him like a bad habit.  All the sudden their were at least ten more ravens circling their dead buddy.  They were squawking very loud so I loaded up another pedator.  Another one lands on the same telephone post.  About that time the rest of them spotted me and they all flew very *_*_*_*_*_*ed off.

I winged one the other day and all of a sudden I had a lot of ravens in the air and trees calling out very  loud! It was really weird.

yeah, they can't stand it when you pick off their lookout. I have a huge pecan tree they love...the first time I dropped one out, others came and circled the yard until there were more than 20 overhead, all just raising hell. After several minutes it was like a beacon, pointing at the scene of the crime.  So much for trying to stay under radar with the neighborhood. My wife said "please don't ever do that again." LOL

A 43yd head shot is awesome!  Good shooting with that Diana.  

They have an impressive wing span don't they?  Be careful though.  It's illegal to shoot ravens in most states.  They are a protected species for some reason but sometimes they are hard to distinguish from crows when that far away.  I shot one that was on a tree behind a lot of branches and leaves thinking it was a crow.  Their cawing I 've learned is a little different than crow's though.

Edit:  Set your digital camera for 640x480 resolution or "low resolution" and they should come out normal and under 100KB which I think is the size limit on this forum.  You can dowload them here straight from your hard drive after you check the "attachment" box at the bottom of you post before you click on submit.  It will then allow you to "browse" your hard drive to the folder they are stored in.

Thanks Harry.  I don't know about anywhere else but their legal at my house.  My wife really did get a little freaked out when the other ravens started circling.  She thought that Alfred Hichcock was near by and so did I.  Wouldn't have been fun to be in the movie "The Birds" with a tuned .22 pellet gun and a few cases of predators?

I don't hunt for a living, I live to hunt.........

When I shot my crow....three others flew above and made a racket.  I quickly went outside and picked up the dead one...after about 20 seconds the rest shut up and flew off.  So I'm thinking....if you remove the dead one fast...they'll fly off.  They still remember me....after almost 3 months...everytime they see me....whether inside or outside....they fly off.   heh heh

Paul I don't have any issues with you shooting ravens, please don't misunderstand me.  Please shoot many more and post pics!  We love them and the stories!  All I 'm saying is be careful one of the neighbors doesn't call "someone".  I was just advising sort of speak and wasn't sure if you knew about the regs..   Shoot them all!  They 're on your property afterall..  hehehe

I know the "Alfred Hitchcock effect" very well.  Crows behave in the same manner when I take one of them down.  I also leave the dead one out there in order for the others to keep coming back (they do for about 2 weeks) so I can get more shot opportunities.  It sounds like the movie "birds" in the morning sometimes when I wake up from the sound of 20 crows on the trees and circling around the dead one waking the up the entire neighborhood.. but it's legal, so I don't care what the neighbors think because there 's nothing they can do about it even though they called the cops on me twice already last year & earlier this year.  I showed them my hunting license and that the gun was an airgun, and they were on their merry way saying I got sh**ty neighbors and felt sorry for me.  I don't feel sorry.. so keep wacking them if you can get away with it and say it was a crow if anyone questions anything.
