custom tuned ruger airhawk compact and custom tuned b3
« on: December 28, 2008, 01:20:01 PM »
these are my first springer tunes  , the b3 turned out ok , i may need to do a bit more on that but it shoots way better than stock , it has been re crowned lube tuned ,every thing was debured,  and has a thin metal washer on the spring guide and the piston .  also painted the receiver od green and have started redoing the stock .

now the air hawk shoots like a completely different rifle from stock . the spring was bone dry , and it had a lot of twang and twisted when shot . it was lube tuned , spring ends debured thin washers on the spring guide and the piston . spring guide was rough so i smoothed it up . shimmed the breach seal added a gamo scope stop , cut off 3 inches of barrel re crowned and custom built a barrel shroud for it .the trigger was good already ,about 3 pounds i would guess .cocking is smooth , and tuned  it has by far the best firing cycle of any springer i have ever owned no twang or twisting just a nice thunk when fired and a loud smack of the pellet hinting its target . i cant believe it shoots so good for a $100 gun and a bit of tweaking . now i am seriously pleased with this gun . it so far likes crosman premier hp , but i don't have much of a variety of pellets to try yet .

edit :: forgot to say that i beded the action or the ruger with jbweld (used some grease as a relase agent so i could take it out of the stock )to get a better fit , the factory had a plastic shim to keep the action straight .

Great review of your tuning experiences Matthew,

I guess you'll need to try something a little different on you B-3, but your AirHawk sounds like a winner !

Good luck ! Let us know how your adventure in tuning turns out ! And give that B-3 some love !

it was missing a pin , made a new one from a broken jewelers screwdriver . i am doing some work to the stock , a new coat of finish is drying . and the ruger just seems to be getting better .

Sounds like you did something right!  It is very rewarding to learn/do something and have success.  My only problem lately is time for shooting!

well i got a chance to do some more work to the b3 . i got it smoothed out quite a bit more . cocking the gun was very rough , i figured it was do to the anti bear trap . i absolutely always keep a hand on the barrel or cocking lever of a springer , so i did not need the anti bear trap so off it went . wow what a difference its so smooth now .

the firing cycle keep on improving and now is very tame , and is very accurate . i cant believe these things are so cheap ! i am going to order another cheap springer to work on , hopefully . i will gewt pics up later of the b3 .i also put on a scope i had , a 3-9x40 bushnell . i have had it on springer for a long time and it has held up fine .
