Got a Crosman Storm XT this July last from Wally World - I wanted a cheap springer for no-pump plinking. According to Crosman, its a Quest 1000, just diffrent name - same parts.
I fired it straight out of the box looking to break it in over 100 to 200 shots. Got over 300, but each time I picked it up for a given shot set, there always seemed to be some oil on the transfer port breach seal and it always smoked the first 5-7 shots of each sitting. Finally Chrony'd it with Crosman Premier heavies, first shot was 1066fps and lots of smoke, then 800, then 925, then 755, then 905, then 700. This was after I had fired about 300 pellets from it (all CPH's). It now has a pronounced 'TWANG' and I really think it has been going into detonation each time I picked it up on a given day for shooting and fired it the first few times.
I sent this info to Crosman, they want me to order parts to fix it; I believe at no-charge.
Moral of this story for Quest and Storm owners, look to see if oil is leaking out of the compression chamber before you fire it and if there is some, tear it down and work it over - heck, out of the box, tear it down and work it over before you fire the first shot.
I will tear into this later this week to see if, as I suspect, that the main spring is either broken, or severly twisted. Also, I would guess the piston seal is a goner and the piston may even be bent - I will let you all know.
I still like the gun and how its made and the scope that came with it - you just have to baby it out of the box which means its not for novice owners I guess.
