B3 Leather Seals
« on: January 06, 2009, 10:06:39 AM »
New to the board and was bit by the air gun bug a few months ago.  Like most my first tune was a B3, I purchased 5 of them just for tuning, over kill maybe but I've had a blast and have turned a couple of my friends in to addicts as well.  I was wondering what you guys use to lube the leather seals after conditioning?

I believe in the Fast Deer tuning guide found in the "library" there is mixture using silicone shock oil and neats foot oil.  I mixed up a batch when I was tuning my B-3's, used it to condition the leather seals.  As for lube I used "dialectric" (not sure I spelled that right)  lube, the stuff you use on spark plugs.....

Hope this helps.....

where do you buy your neatsfoot oil?  In the Fast Deer tuning guide he says it's readily available but just doing some on-line searching of the major hardware stores and wal-mart I can't find it.  Just wondering if it's going to be hard to find.  He also mentions you can get the Silicone shock oil at hobby shops, is that where you get yours?  Hate to ask dumb questions like this but since I’ve gotten into tuning I find myself running all over town accumulating all the things needed to tune. .

Jim:
Just happened to be wandering around & found your post. You might try a western wear or boot shop. If that doesn't work, try a feed store.
Good luck,  Mike

Thanks Mike.  I had never heard of Neatsfoot Oil, I thought it was oil for your feet..  LOL  I was thinking I could get it at a drug store.  Never really had given much thought at all to oils and lubes until tuning.

If you happen to live near a city with a Tandy leather store, they carry it.  If you're into making your own seals, they often have remnants of their tooling leather for sale.  You buy it by the pound - $10 will get you a lifetime supply.

I got my neatsfoot oil at my local hardware store.  As for the silicone shock oil,,,, I went to Amazon.com and did a search and found several online hobby sites that stocked it and I ordered it from one of them....  Hope this helps ya out....

can be purchased at just about any hobby shop store that sells and supplies parts for Remote Control Racing Cars. It comes in a several viscosities. I suggest 20 or 30wt. They will know what you talking about. It’s about 3.50 and comes in 4 oz. bottle I believe.

From the man himself, thank you for the documents and information you provide!  Got one of your triggers for my Gamo, it's a work of art.

I was able to get the Neatsfoot oil and shock oil locally today.
