Bull vs regular barrel.....
« on: January 16, 2009, 05:39:38 AM »
I don`t post here because I`m not a tinkerer......but read some of the posts here.I`m hoping someone can tell me why my Bull barrel Gamo Viper is quieter than my regular barrel Gamo Big Cat....they have the same powerplant. I had once unscrewed the whole bull barrel off and shot the Viper...and the bang is just as loud as the BC`s. I looked inside the bull barrel and it`s just one long tube with a screw on end cap at the muzzle. I`m thinking all the air andreport should come out of the muzzle....but why is it quieter? I hope I don`t get reprimanded or banned for this question....I know it`s a touchy subject!!!!

I would think it is harmonics. Do both have sleeve's for barrels under the plastic or just one?

I think you're right about the harmonics...since there's a 1/4" gap going all around the barrel on the Viper....more space for the vibrations to scatter.

I don't exactly understand your question about the sleeves.  But the Big Cat's steel barrel is completely surrounded by plastic....right on the barrel.  While the Viper's steel barrel is surrounded by a bull barrel (Thin metal tube) with a 1/4" gap of space all around going down the whole length.  Thanks for the reply.

I think the Bull Barrel Tube you're talking about is a shroud. There's probably a gap between the muzzle and the back side of the shroud cap. If there is, then the escaping air expands into the shroud and not into the ambient atmosphere. Makes for a quieter gun.

Thanks guys...yes it's true...I checked carefully yesterday and there is a gap between the end-cap of the shroud and the barrel...so the air/noise or most of it I guess goes back towards the shooter inside the shroud.  And thanks for the link MEHavey....very good read.
