About how many lubes can be done with JM's kit?
« on: February 02, 2009, 02:37:55 AM »
Well, just ordered my first JM product - his three lube set.  Got a couple of guns to try and lube tune.  About how many is the kit good for?  (Know I will be using mostly the heavy tar for dampening - not worried about speed.)

Also, in really old guns (pre-war), which is better on the springs, light or heavy tar?  These are as naked as when they left the factory.

Thanks in advance

LOL Red. It does not take much lube to lube tune a springer. It should last you a long long time. Unless you lube tune about 30 or more springers or so..:)

Older springer get the same treatment.

I got his 3 lube kit about a year and a half ago , clear will last 5 more years, tar will last about 4 more years ,and moly 2 more months, I have done about 20 tunes with them so far. I use a little more moly than the rest so maybe that is why his moly says new larger size. It will last a long time

Thanks, guys.  20/30 tunes?  Hmmmm... Don't worry, Gene, you are safe from new competition.  Of course, repairing what I screw up may be lucrative.

In JM's lube kit, he have the heavy tar to dampen the spring vibration, moly paste/grease for smooth sliding......what's the "clear" tar for?

I think he shoots himself in the foot by not telling you exactly what you will get.  I got the kit and I think there's a couple or three ounces of the clear and heavy and maybe 1 1/2 or two of moly.  I thought they would be in teeny containers.

Here's what JM lists his clear tar as being used for:

"Great for compression tube OD's, barrel pivots and all friction areas.  Will do many guns.  Required for sidelevers and underlevers.

SAFETY DATA SHEET,

#2  Clear Synthetic Grease With Teflon-Tackifier additives."

Now, what is a "compression tube OD"?  "Outer Diameter"?  Figure it doesn't belong on the outside, so where?

Thanks Red....I read that too....but isn't the Moly paste the same thing?   I'm wondering if I should get the Large Heavy Tar and Moly Paste or the kit (heavy tar, clear tar and Moly paste).

Hey Red, you would be surprised how much tuning work is out there. Enough for all us guys who tune springers and more.

I was surprised at the quick service from JM.  Got the kit the next day.  Of course, it's not that far.

Do you guys mean you put the clear on the outside of the gun, i.e. - the compression tube and barrel?  Been using my old Rig Rag and so far, so good.  Old school all the way, baby!

No , you don't use it to wipe the gun down.  Use it on the barrel hinge cocking arm joints or if it has a sliding breach like a 48 , it has a nice silver breach that slides back and forth , you put it on there because it is clear ,moly is dark gray so if you use moly on that breach it will look like crap. Or any were that you might touch when using the gun, so your hands don't get dirty wile shooting..
