How to clean barrel?

Pardon me for my newbie question, but how do you clean the barrel?  I just received my .22 yesterday from Cabela's, and want to run some patches down the barrel.  The view with a bore reflector looks good, but I want to clean out any grease or other residue.

I have an Otis .177 flexible (pull-through) cleaning rod, but the brass fitting for the patch is too large (angle is too sharp) to fit through the loading port, because of the bolt.  There isn't enough of the brass tip exposed to attach the patch, if I run run the tip in from the muzzle.

Is disassembly required?  That seems a little extreme just to clean the barrel.  I have the exploded parts diagram, if anyone wants to refer to that.

I also just wanted to put in a good word for Mike at TKO - there were some shipping issues with a muzzle brake, but he made good on it, and in a timely manner.

You can use a cleaning rod from the muzzle . But forget the oil you mentioned it could get in the port and ignite when fired .Use a none petroleum based cleaner .Marvin

Thanks for the reply - so what you're saying is, what I've found:  without disassembly, you can't clean from the breach.  Not ideal, but it is what it is.

No, I wasn't going to use the Otis solution - I have some Straight Shooter's cleaner/degreaser for my airguns.

I have not done it but you might try fishing line or weed eater cord through the barrel with a patch drawn though as well . Marvin

I  recently made one from the weed eater line.  I used an exacto knife to cut a slit about 1/2 inch near the end.   Then I used a butane lighter to melt the rough edges (probably not necessary), can rapidly insert a patch, load line into the breech, feed till it comes out of the muzzle, then pull from the muzzle.    I'd remove the TKO to clean....

Weed whacker line and GooGone. Lightly wet your first patch with GooGone, run it through then follow up with a couple clean dry patch's.:) Shoot her to season the barrel up with lead and your good to go. Ed

i tried the weed eater line and all it did was pull thru the middle of the patches. i use a .177 rod, both padded and steel, both one piece, just as i always did on powder burners. they dont require much cleaning.  john
