First home tune finally done
« on: February 20, 2009, 11:14:51 AM »
It took forever waiting for damaged parts but I finally finished lube tuning my new Quest.  Seriously, it was a total pain, but the results were worth the trouble.  The rifle is now so much smoother and quieter!  Not even a hint of dieseling! Got a new Maccari seal and brass bushings from airgunsmith.  Thank you Bob and Mike Melick for answering some of my questions early on.  I followed Bob's tutorial to the letter and it worked out great.  I can't say I enjoyed the work but the results are surprisingly good.

What lube did you use on the compression chamber/seal and what did you use the bushings for? Tx.

I used Maccari lubes and auto silicone and followed Bob's instructions here:  http://www.charliedatuna.com/airgun_docs/B19%20Super%20Tune.doc.  I replaced the plastic shims in the barrel block with brass bushings from http://www.airgunsmith.com/quest/quest.htm

Just an update on my self-tuned Quest.  Sweet and smooth.  The more I shoot it, the better it gets.  I mounted a 3-9x40 Leapers scope with high Accushot rings and it works very well.  No twang, no dieseling, just a nice solid thump.  Crazy how much of a difference some cleaning and lubing have made.  I'm still shaking my head in disbelief.  No wonder you all so strongly recommend tuning the more economical guns.  I had to modify the GRT trigger blade to allow the safety to engage but it works great.  I think the best word I can use to describe the Quest now is smooth.  Thanks.

Which size bushing did you use? Did you press them in? Any other things going on there?

I'm in the process of tuning my B19 atm and these bushings are definitely next. Did you you silicone grease in the compression chamber? If so what kind? Thanks.
