Gamo Scope doesn't cut it
« on: July 10, 2009, 01:36:29 PM »
I just got my Gamo Whisper VH back from Gene a couple of days ago. He did a Turbo Tune on it and I was running some ammo through it to season the barrel and tighten up my groups. I was having trouble with my Leapers 3-9X32AO. The horizontal and verticle adjustments would only work for a dozen clicks then turn real hard, almost needed a screwdriver to make it move. I took it off and put the original Gamo scope on (the same one that came with the Whisper). I shot a couple of hundred pellets through it when on my last shot the verticle adjustment knob fell off. Thats right, busted clean off. This scope couldn't stand up to the recoil of the Whisper. My groups were just starting to come around, just one or two fliers way out 3 or 4" from the rest. Just couldn't figure it out. Now we know.

I have another Leapers coming. Should be here next Tuesday. I sent them an email about the trouble I'm having with their scope. No answer yet.

I am a newby at this air rifle business. I must say I am really impressed at the accuracy they are capable of. I remember when all we had were BB guns. Incredible

My shooters so far: RWS Diana 34  .177, Gamo Whisper Deluxe VH .177

Looks like you over torque your scope for the know to come off. Scopes can only go so far up or sideways. If your mount is not lined up if 2 piece mount this happens or if AG has droop. What I do on mine is turn it all the way and know the median of turns after optically zeroing it where all quadrants are the same and start from there. You can zero in with knobs maxed but it will not hold for long because the spring holding or adjuster is now touching the tube and recoil will upset the setting over time because it's not free floating with just the spring. If you max your knob and still shoot low you need to shim the rear ring.

It looks to me like the adjustment knob was about half way out in its total length of travel.

My first problems with a Gamo Whisper was the scope. Positive proof that Gamo does not mind one shipping crap, and I doubt you will get satisfaction from their "service". Remove the aluminum riser, replace the scope and the mounts (get high mounts, I think although I traded mine before doing this). The Leapers scopes are also controversial. I have a Centerpoint (made by Leapers) and it has been OK, I bought one at WM and took it back, but I think it was really the inability to get the scope secured on the rail. Good luck in the Gamo quality lottery. If the tickets were cheaper, I might try it again. At least you can get a nice trigger for it...

Gamo and other sellers of air guns put these packages together as a marketing ploy. Most all the scope's that are sold with the new air guns are just junk and that goes for the rings as well. Throw them in the trash. I never could understand why people say remove the riser that is on the action of the guns. I have owned over the last few years over 2 dozen Gamo's and never ever had a problem with the riser. Am I just lucky?

Make sure you replace your rings or mount with a good one piece mount "Accushot Mount" and a good air gun rated scope..

Am I just unlucky, Gene? Several others have reported the same, I have photos. The cross section of that soft aluminum extrusion on the Whisper riser is maybe 80 thousandths thick.
I did all the things with the tightening, one piece Accushot, the thread locker, etc. and my mount pins plowed through that riser quickly. My general opinion of Gamos is pretty negative, but you know a lot more than I do, so I bow to your experience.

I still hold a pretty low opinion of what I saw, and the glaringly obvious photos I've seen here lately of Gamo internals. And as you say, the scope is garbage. If they use that "ploy", I lose trust. I do know that others (like Randall) have Whispers that shoot fine. I believe most of those have had to do various tunings, trigger and other part replacement to get good results. If I had your skills, maybe I would be more forgiving.

I agree, "Gamo quality lottery" sums it up.

I have a Bigcat and like it (for the price).  I had been having problem with it so I contacted Gamo... What a joke! I spoke to SEVERAL people and nobody seemed to know their product or what they were talking about.  When I politely called them on it they got *_*_*_*_*_*y. I had to use the resources found here to fix it myself.

For the price, + a GRT III, you still have a pretty you nice shooter.  As for Gamo's service, knowledge, and expertise, they suck ass!

Also, I talked to Centerpoint last week and was told that leapers does NOT make scoped for them anymore.
