Is It Air Arms Or Webley??,,,, :)
« on: October 04, 2009, 10:47:19 AM »
Well,, I got started early this am (Crack of 10) on me Pops new Webley Tomahawk!!While the gun is flawless metalwise the stock had quite a few dings in it. Broke out the ole De Walt sander & got right to work. Within an hour or so I had her mostly stripped. MAN that stain goes DEEP!!I know De Walt LOVES me,,,, not cause I buy thier tools,,,they make a ton of $$ off of the sand paper I buy from them!! LOL!! Well,,, I know Tommy will HATE me,, but,,, this "Tommy Hawk" is no longer ambi!! I decided to lighten her up & remove the right side cheek piece since Me Pops liked what I did on his FWB!! This is SCAREY stuff Folks,,, one wrong move & I would have ruined this stock!!All went well,,,, 2 sanding belts later!! LOL!! I sure love the Air Arms look,,,,, I cant wait to get time to rip into me Marauder stock!! I hope Ya like her Pops,,,, I stuck with it all day,,,, I just came in but I got the first coat of stain/oil on it!!Im getting almost caught up now,,,, just have Erinie & Robins stocks to finish up. I will get em all done,,,,, see Ya next weekend Pops!!Timbo.

I like yer work, sir. I'm glad I'm not the only tung oil fan here. My first stock job was refinishing a Chinese SKS stock. Night and day difference. Off with the orange goop and on with 10 coats of tung oil. That Chinese beech stock went from bland and soft to beautiful and hard. One of the things I like so much about tung oil is the fact that it polymerizes in the wood and actually hardens it. I have a Mossberg .22 stock I'm refinishing that I'm going to finish with tung oil if I ever get around to it.

Have you ever used teak oil? I've been wanting to use it but don't know how it compares to tung.

I salute you for being able to use the belt sander and not ugly up the stock. For me, a belt sander is the quickest way to turn a minor refinishing  job into a major repair job.
