If you need a longer basement range !!!
« on: April 27, 2009, 10:10:22 AM »
When I was a kid in Oregon a friend of my dad had taken a post hole auger and fabricated a bracket to turn it horizontal and he drilled into the side of his basemet and into his back yard so he had a 25 yd pistol and 22 lr range. I only saw this a time or two. back then it seemed to be about 12" diameter and possibly 20 to 25 ft with a well casing liner ( my dad was a well driller for a few years and this guy worked with him). Now days you could push pieces of PVC into the hole for a casing. I thought it was cool he used train tracks to send his target down the hole and a cheap flash light to light up the target.

If you're in an area that is not to snooty you could have a backhoe guy come in for a few hours and dig a trench and put a 12 or 24" pipe in your backyard and but it up to the basement wall. That would be easier on the back not having to move all that dirt out of the basement. If your neighbors want to know what it is Tell them its a fall out shelter. HA HA

Just a thought for anyone that might need a few more yards or so.

I saw where one fellow built an underground range much like you described.  Trenched it out and put something like a Quonset in and backfilled it.  Of course, you could save yourself the trouble and just join a range.

My dad turkey shoots(Shotgun target shoot) and where he shoots often they have a big ditch drain pipe from building they shoot from to the target 35yds. Shotgun patterns  are affected very badly by wind, and to keep people from saying thats not fair the wind blew harder when I shot they have it completely inclosed. I have got to post a pic of one of these shotguns, they are super modified(the nascar of shotguns) and are the damnedest things ya ever saw. weigh bout 85 lbs,and have a backward trigger. You pull trigger all way back to engage it and let go to fire, reduces movement. They have bull barrels that are like 3" dia,and the craziest stepped chokes I ever seen. Dad had one of his barrel's  made from a cannon off a ship dated in late 1700's with cryogenic treatment. Supposedly ya can't get metal as good as it was then . If you guys think we take it to extremes on pellet guns ya should see some of the stuff I have seen growing up going to those turkey shoots.AKJC1977
