Pellgunoil -- ND 30W Motor oil -- Mineral oil -- the same???
« on: October 03, 2009, 05:17:05 AM »
Just got my new MM-tuned AR2078A (target stock w/peeps) and it is awesome. I love shooting it. Great balance and accuracy. Loves the Peak wads and Gamo Match. I'm glad it likes cheap pellets. Planning to use a remote with a 20 or 24 oz tank. That should give me over 1000 shots per fill! I'll have to add that setup to my XMas list.

So far, I've been using CO2 powerlets. I know the recommendation is to use a drop of pellgunoil on the tip when inserting a new cart. Then I read on this forum and the PA blog that pellgunoil is 30W non-detergent motor. OK, so I go down to my local Walmart and look at their non-detergent motor oil (30W) and the label says pure mineral oil. I figure that's not right so I go to the local AutoZone store and look at theirs -- same thing -- pure mineral oil.

So now I'm confused. Can I just use the mineral oil I have in the medicine cabinet or is there really another formulation of ND 30W oil that I haven't been able to find?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Nothing wrong with mineral oil, for a drop of lube on the end of a powerette cartridge I prefer silicone oil. For most  AG applications plain old mineral oil and/or petroleum jelly is quite satisfactory.

I have the walmart ACCEL 30 SAE ND oil I bought 2 years ago and have not had problem with my QB78deluxe and crosman 2250. I use one drop every tin of pellet. Too much is too much, and will gunk up your shooter. Difference on regular motor oil is additives that can harm seals. I would not try medicine cabinet oil unless your shooter is sick.

Back when Sheridan was it's own company (and didn't want to promote a rival company's product) they recommended light motor oil. Daisy still does. The non-detergent variety doesn't have all the additives that degrade seals. I use ND30W on all my CO2 and pump airguns. Also use it to lube external joints on the springers.

My son used regular old mineral oil in his paintball guns (Really big bore CO2 airgun?) for several years without issue. Now he's been using air tool oil.

The term "mineral oil" has a usage referring to oil from geological sources as opposed to plant and animal sourced "oils".
See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_oil

Based on reading years ago related to knives, I have been using "mineral oil USP" (United States Pharmacopeia) as a lubricant for years. That's another common use of term - specifically meaning the drugstore product. I've also seen it referred to as "FGMO" food grade mineral oil.
It's cheap, clear, non-toxic, non-oxidizing, won't go rancid, and is a pure grade without additives. Available at any drugstore. I put it in a little squeeze bottle with a needle adapter and use it for many purposes.

I think that chemically, it is almost the same as ND30 oil, but It has a better purity. I apply it to my maple cutting board occasionally, and it is sometimes used as a finish for wood.
That being said, it has a flash point, and it's flammable. I think one should be careful using it in airguns, as it would certainly diesel if it gets in the wrong place.
